WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The fifth complete season of South Park presented in this 3-disc set is finally here and itís just as funny and smart as the previous four seasons were. The popular animated show created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, featuring the likes of Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny as the four mischievous schoolboys of this small Colorado mountain town, is back jam-packed with the kind of twisted, foul-mouthed and pop-culture riddled humor we all just love.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Whatís not to like for a dedicated South Park lover as I am? For one thing, the sheer volume of parodies included in these fourteen episodes is amazing, and nobody is safe, not even David BlaineÖ Everything from real-life crimes (Susan Smith, OJ and the Colorado Ramseys) to Osama to stem cell research is made fun of and itís about time too because that is what this type of humor does best. In this manner, it also shows us the absurdity of the thing that is made fun of and thatís why I find itís smart humor, because it makes you go ďHmmm...Ē Overall though, itís the twisted, sick type of humor that really gets me laughing hard, and yes, itís everywhere you look people!

Iíll only discuss some of my favorite shows here as there were way too many to cover. Cartman, Kenny, Kyle and Stan have a new friend whoís becoming more visible in this season, the lovable Butters. In this season, he gets his very own episode, and itís a great one in which we find out all kinds of crazy stuff on his life, and the fact that his last name is ďScotchĒ too. The episode ďKenny DiesĒ was different in a good way as it was serious, and unlike the usual Kenny dying in every single show, in this one itís played out dramatically sad, so sad that JaneBlo herself shed some tears, and you would too, I think. Well done, Parker and StoneÖit was a risk well appreciated. South Parkís favorite cripple, Timmy, gets himself some competition in this season as another cripple comes to town and starts getting all the attention. A cripple fight ensues, and itís a nasty one that is drawn-out and rough, and funny as Hell.

In the special Terrance & Phillip episode we discover that Phillip is from Montreal, where Iím from too so that made me smile. They feature an E True Hollywood Story parody on the two farters that is to die for! Finally seeing what Cartmanís, Stanís and Kyleís hair looks like underneath their forever glued-on hats was a thrill for me and we finally see that in this season, as well as the introduction of Towelie, the talking government-controlled towel that always wants to get high, an adorable new character whoís in two shows this season. The Token show was great too as although itís about racism, never is the word mentioned. The ironic humor is well played out and many real-life celebs are featured. One last thing, the fact that Chef refers to Stan (or any other single kid) as ĒChildrenĒ is something I love, itís so ďChefĒ and we even get that in this season.
THE EXTRAS
Commentary by the creators of South Park: Trey Parker and Matt Stone: As in the previous seasons, Parker and Stone include three to six minute audio commentaries for each show to entertain us viewers with cool and interesting facts about the shows, the ideas behind them and their own weird thought processes. I love listening to them talk, and joke around, theyíre very easy to listen to. These commentary tracks are so worth checking out, also because theyíre short, as I donít enjoy long-drawn-out stuff. As the only extra feature on this DVD, itís more than enough for the South Park fan in you. Itís the shows that are the real meat anyway.

Comedy Central Quickies: Three short quickies from Comedy Central, including one with Butters as Captain Chaos, as well as a very funny ďReno 911Ē parody that is hilarious.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
To sum it up, I recommend buying this DVD not only because I have been an avid South Park watcher since the show began years ago, but because laughter is a good thing, and one can never have enough of it. This DVD will certainly make you laugh, and laugh a lot as it confronts controversial, often twisted topics and combines them with a perverted sense of humor and many hilarious parodies throughout. The fact that itís not filled with a bunch of extras doesnít take away from the overall DVD score as all that stuff isnít necessary when the episodes themselves are fully loaded with such great humor. Probably the funniest season yet, worth adding to your DVD collection.
