WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The denizens of the Looney Tunes universe are threatened by an evil Alien (voiced by Danny De Vito), who wants to enslave them in his fledgling amusement park. Bugs Bunny manages to get the gang a short reprieve, with them wagering their freedom on a basketball game. In order to win, Bugs Bunny travels to Earth, in the hope of convincing Michael Jordan, who’s in the middle of his short-lived second career in baseball, to come play for his team.

IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
For me, SPACE JAM is one of the all-time, WTF movies of the nineties. I love the Looney Tunes as much as anyone, but the gang we see in SPACE JAM is not the gang we grew up with. Firstly, the CGI assisted animation SUCKS, and if anyone tries to chalk this up to the fact is was made fifteen years ago, just try popping in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (made eight years earlier) instead. The difference is gargantuan.

The most infamous part of SPACE JAM is the addition of a sassy, “sexy”, girl bunny to the team, as some idiot studio exec somewhere thought the Looney Tunes were sexist. Ummm, yeah. So now we get a Bugs Bunny romantic subplot- yup, just what we needed.

As for star Michael Jordan- to be fair, he’s relatively decent here if you keep in mind the fact that many of his contemporaries tried acting around the same time. Next to Shaq in KAZAAM, and STEEL, and Dennis Rodman in DOUBLE TEAM, and the abominable SIMON SEZ, Jordan comes off looking like Olivier. That said, no one complained when this turned out to be his only film.

SPACE JAM would be a total loss were it not for one guy- Bill Murray. Yup, the great Murricane shows up in an extended cameo as himself, helping out in the climactic basketball game. To give this a little context, when Jordan announced he was quitting basketball to play baseball, Murray started a mock PSA campaign, where he pretended to quit acting in order to take Jordan’s place on the Bulls. It was pretty funny (too bad none of the spots are on the blu-ray), and Jordan apparently enjoyed the good-natured ribbing, hence Murray’s appearance in the film. De Vito also gets off a great line when Murray shows up, exclaiming, “I didn’t know Dan Aykroyd was in this picture.” It’s pretty much the only decent part of the film.

THE EXTRAS
The best extra here is the audio commentary by director Joe Pytka, and, as special guests, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. Funny stuff. Next up are two music videos from the soundtrack, sadly NOT including R. Kelly's hit "I Believe I Can Fly." There's also a 20 minutes behind the scenes , and the trailer .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
SPACE JAM is really only worth picking up for nostalgia’s sake. The Looney Tunes are great, but this is a poor showcase.
