They took advantage of every opportunity to sell their fame and make money. The ultimate example of this came in the form of SPICE WORLD. The film gets a bad rap because the Spice Girls are pretty much a punch line these days, but people forget that this was actually a semi-decent film. Itís not going to be compared to A HARD DAYíS NIGHT anytime soon, but as far as rockumentaries go, it wasnít bad.
I feel that by not slamming this movie, Iím giving up a serious number of man-cards. But thatís ok. I didnít hate the movie and Iím not completely ashamed to admit that. The music is bad on so many levels, but you canít deny the fact their jingles get stuck in your head and make you smile. Itís not deep and meaningful music, but again, they donít try to be. Watching them run around London singing their songs is mildly amusing and the movie doesnít take it self seriously at all. Also, the Spice Girls were actually kind of hot at this time since this is before the kids and plastic surgery.
Normally, at this point in a review, I give a few examples of things the filmmakers could have done better and some things I didnít like. In this case, nothing I say could make this film better. Itís pretty much as good as a Spice Girl movie is going to get. The Girls are cheesy and embarrassing, so any movie about them is going to be the same. When you rent or buy this movie, you know exactly what youíre getting, so have fun with it.
