WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Five years ago, Superman left earth to see for himself if his planet was gone. Now, five years later, everyone on earth has moved on without him, including Lois Lane. Unfortunately, the evil Lex Luthor has hatched a plan to destroy the world and only Superman can save it.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Superman is the consummate superhero. Hes invincible, charming, and of course, he can fly. Unfortunately for Bryan Singer, two fantastic Superman movies have already been made and they have set the standard pretty high for any director hoping to follow. Luckily, Singer was up to the challenge and he managed to take a comic-sacred superhero and live up to the quality of the first two movies.

Its also important to mention that Singer completely ignores the existence of SUPERMAN 3 and 4, which is a good thing given how poor those films were. Singer pays homage to all of the other Superman films, the TV shows and especially the comics. Its that respect for Supermans history that makes me comfortable with Supermans future. Another key point for SUPERMAN RETURNS is the incredibly impressive performance of Brandon Routh. Youve heard he does a good job, but until you actually see him portray the Man of Steel, you just dont realize how great he really is. Not only does he have the physical presence of Superman and the bumbling factor of Clark Kent, but he just sounds like Superman. Christopher Reeve will always be Superman for most, but Brandon Routh deserves the role and kudos to Singer for finding him.

As much as I loved the film, I will say the weakest link was in the evil plot hatched by Lex Luthor (played wonderfully by Kevin Spacey). I just never felt that impending doom necessary in a comic book film. I never bought into the plot because it really didnt make sense to me. I also didnt like the inconsistencies with Superman and his vulnerability to Kryptonite.

However, when it comes down to it, SUPERMAN RETURNS is everything you want in a quality superhero film. It has a charming lead actor, great human characters and a wonderful story were all familiar with. Despite a not-so-great evil plot, Returns entertains as an action film and delivers as a film.
THE EXTRAS
Requiem for Krypton: Making Superman Returns (173:32): Wow. Nearly three hours of documentaries that can be broken up into five chapters, or watched all at once. I dont know if Ive ever seen a making-of documentary this inclusive. This includes everything youd want to know about the literal making-of SUPERMAN RETURNS. I say literal because you wont find much about the casting, or other conceptual ideas. The last little part of the documentary is dedicated to outtakes and bloopers and theres a nice surprise in there for all Superman fans.

Resurrecting Jor-El (4:03): In case you havent heard, Marlon Brando reprises his role as Jor-El in this film despite the fact he passed on a while ago. This little featurette is dedicated to the steps they took and the effects they used to put him in the film. I would have liked an interview with a member of his estate to talk about the importance of using his likeness but overall its a nice feature.

Deleted Scenes (14:44): These are all pretty good, but I hope the last scene isnt a set-up of the next Superman film. I really hope they go away from the crystal plot because it really didnt work. Other than that, fans of the film will appreciate these deleted scenes.

There are also some Previews.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Although successful, SUPERMAN RETURNS didnt generate the box-office revenue Warner Brothers had hoped. Dont let that dissuade you from picking this DVD up. You will not be disappointed.
