Unlike that movie, SUPERMAN UNBOUND is a much more traditional adventure, with the storyline having been adapted from the graphic novel, SUPERMAN: BRAINIAC. In the past, DC's made some interesting DTV animated films, especially the adult-oriented adaptations of some of the darker Batman graphic novels. Superman:Brainiac is fairly light in comparison, and it can't help but feel like this animated adventure is aimed squarely at the kiddies, even if by the time the opening credits come to a close we've already seen an alien's eye plucked out of it's socket (ewwwwwww).
One of the more interesting aspects of SUPERMAN UNBOUND is the voice cast. WHITE COLLAR's Matt Bomer might have made a good big-screen Superman himself (he certainly looks the part), and he has the right goody-two-shoes approach to the role which puts him sqaurely in line with guys like Dean Cain and Brandon Routh (although I assume Henry Cavill's interpretation will be much more exciting). Likewise, Stana Katic, from CASTLE would have been a fine choice to play Lois Lane, and her interpretation seems heavily modeled on Teri Hatcher's take on the role from LOIS & CLARK. Katic's CASTLE co-star Molly Quinn voices the teenaged Supergirl. FRINGE fans will also get a kick out John Noble's performance as Brainiac.
