WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
An married man (lying about his age) befriends an eighteen year old girl online and before he knows it their relationship becomes a deadly game of seduction, deceit and murder.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
At first glance, I thought TALHOTBLOND was going to be something completely different from what it actually was (a punch square in the nuts). I expected a run of the mill documentary about the dangers of online dating/chatting and what not, but what I got was an extremely interesting look at a love triangle that takes place between three strangers on the web which consequently ends badly for nearly everyone involved. This was one intense seventy five minutes and though brutal and totally shocking, the reality of the situation wouldnít let me look away.

The overall theme of the story here is a simple one, and one that anyone who ďplays aroundĒ online could see coming a mile away. Tomís a middle aged man with a marriage on the rocks and a dead end job. Now Tom wouldnít be the first guy to go online, hit the chat rooms and then lie his ass off to try and impress a young, naive chick. But without giving away too much, I just donít get these fools who go in there thinking theyíre talking to hot chicks, cool chicks or in some cases, a chick at all. Weíve all heard about the urban legends, the scare tactics, the pedophiles, the kiddie porn dungeons and of course the cops that now try to lure and track them all, so why would people still fall for any of it these days? Well, loneliness is a bitch and we all love attention.

Loneliness and attention are at the heart of this tale (aside from deception, murder and confusing reality and fiction of course). Itís true what they say, you can be anything or anyone you want on the internet and itís not just chat rooms that give us this power. Iíve seen and heard of lonely men and women searching for some sort of connection, but those same people play online games like WORLD OF WARCRAFT for all the same reasons. I play the game from time to time (when my workload permits), and if I had a dollar for every time some guy convinced some girl to send him topless pics of herself on MySpace or MSN, Iíd have a nice piece of change. Sure, this is a touch mild by comparison to the film, but these paths all have the potential to lead to the same place.

TALHOTBLOND didnít surprise me or hit me in the same way it might hit other people. I was mortified by the outcome and a little sickened by how far down the road to hell the world has slipped, but I didnít at all have a hard time believing this was a true story. Do I think everyone should watch this flick as a means of a heads-up? Maybe. Do I think that you would all know exactly how this story ends almost before it begins? Certainly. Do I think it will ultimately make a difference? Who knows. But I will say that there is a difference between knowing this story and actually sitting there and watching it unfold. For some, this could be quite the eye opener.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
This isnít the type of film you rush out to rent or buy, but one I do feel is relevant and worthy of our attention in this digital day and age. Itís not a happy tale (which is obvious from the start) but I suppose if even one personís awareness level is upped as a result, this flick will have done what it set out to do.
