WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A low-rent PI (antoinio Banderas) is hired by a hulking Russian boxer to find his missing girlfriend (Sienna Guillory). Soon, the case spirals into a wacked-out quest involving a porn entrepreneur (Snoop Dogg), dirty cops (William Fichtner, Delroy Lindo, and Thomas Kretschmann), and a reclusive billionaire (Sam Elliot) astrophysicist.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
THE BIG BANG is like a forties film noir crossed with DONNIE DARKO, or at least that's what it tries to be. It starts off with a scene right out of MURDER MY SWEET, with Banderas' Philip Marlowe-like detective, temporarily blinded and being interrogated by the cops. From there, in classic film noir mode, the story is told in flashback. The plot, of a thug looking for his missing girlfriend, is also right out of MURDER MY SWEET (based on the Raymond Chandler novel, FAREWELL MY LOVELY), but from there we plunge into wacked out Sci-Fi territory.

Some credit is due to THE BIG BANG in that it at least tries to be unique. In the lead, Banderas brings his usualy charisma, but I think he might be a little too smooth to play a rumpled PI. Co-star William Fichtner probably would have been a better choice.

How much you like this film is really dependent on your taste for the quirky, but I must admit the film tested my patience a bit - similar to te recent SAINT JOHN OF LAS VEGAS. Nothing wrong with being quirky, if you have sharp enough material to back it up, but THE BIG BANG just doesn't really work.

That said, there are things about the film that I liked. The look of the film is great, with them going the opposite of the desaturated film noir look that you'd usually get in a film like this. Rather, the colors are almost psychedelic, which, coupled with the far-out premise, leads me to think this mght play better if you happen to be stoned. Sadly, I was not.

The cast is also quite good, with Elliot bringing a lot to his zany role, and Autumn Reeser having a fun part as a horny, astro-physics obsessed waitress (doen't hurt that she goes nude).
THE EXTRAS
We get a commentary track , some deleted scenes and a featurette .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
While I was probably too sober to fully get into THE BIG BANG, it's still an OK movie, and deserves points for trying to be unique. If you want to see a kooky film-noir/sci-fi hybrid, give it a shot.

movie totally sucked & got weird towards the end, but that had to be one of the hottest sex scenes ever filmed.
