Some credit is due to THE BIG BANG in that it at least tries to be unique. In the lead, Banderas brings his usualy charisma, but I think he might be a little too smooth to play a rumpled PI. Co-star William Fichtner probably would have been a better choice.
How much you like this film is really dependent on your taste for the quirky, but I must admit the film tested my patience a bit - similar to te recent SAINT JOHN OF LAS VEGAS. Nothing wrong with being quirky, if you have sharp enough material to back it up, but THE BIG BANG just doesn't really work.
That said, there are things about the film that I liked. The look of the film is great, with them going the opposite of the desaturated film noir look that you'd usually get in a film like this. Rather, the colors are almost psychedelic, which, coupled with the far-out premise, leads me to think this mght play better if you happen to be stoned. Sadly, I was not.
The cast is also quite good, with Elliot bringing a lot to his zany role, and Autumn Reeser having a fun part as a horny, astro-physics obsessed waitress (doen't hurt that she goes nude).
