WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A football hooligan finally finds his long lost brother, who turns out to be England's greatest spy.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY is probably Sacha Baron Cohen’s best comedy since BORAT, but that's not saying much.

A more accurate description would be to call it Cohen’s FREDDY GOT FINGERED. It’s constantly outrageous and over-the-top disgusting for the sake of it. There are seriously things in this movie that make the nude fight scene from BORAT seem tame by comparison. One in particular involving an elephant (similar to FREDDY) is probably one of the worst things I've ever seen on film. You think, "Oh I can see where this is going." No, you cannot. And you cannot unsee where it has gone.

I'd be lying if I said some of the shock humor didn't make me laugh. And as a comedy, that's really what counts, so GRIMSBY works in that regard. However, as a riff on the action-spy genre, it's much less successful. Director Louis Leterrier has a solid eye for action and tries to insert some much-needed energy in between the big comedic set pieces (including some first-person POV shots ala HARDCORE HENRY), but he's not given anything to work with in the script department. I don't know if Cohen was saving the best stuff for himself, but the writing completely wastes the talented supporting cast in ways that's almost impressive. How do you have Ian MacShane, Penelope Cruz, Isla Fisher, Scott Adkins and Rebel Wilson at your disposal and give them literally nothing to do?

The story attempts to be a parody of the spy genre by inserting a classless hooligan in to a James Bond story, but GRIMSBY doesn’t have anything clever to say and ends up being just a cliché-ridden carbon copy of other movies, including KINGSMAN—which also featured co-star Mark Strong. And let's take a second to commiserate with poor Strong, a great actor who is just embarrassed over and over again as Cohen's brother. The man has good comedic timing and the guts to "go there" with every ridiculous thing the film throws at him, but you can't help but feel bad for the guy. For example, the final climactic scene, a touching moment where the two brothers finally come together, involves the pair emotionally connecting while being rectally penetrated. It's like a car crash; you realize what you're seeing is terrible, but you just can't look away.

THE EXTRAS

Note: I was sent the DVD version of the film to review, but I believe the Blu Ray has more special features, including deleted scenes.

Line O Rama (2:21): Various scenes where Cohen and Rebel Wilson attempted different one liners, which means more scatological humor for everyone!

Gag Reel (2:34): People breaking character and laughing. Seemed to happen a lot.

Mb Pretty much all cast and crew show up to discuss creation of the film, shooting on location around the world, and what it was like on set. Pretty basic stuff, along with random behind-the-scenes footage.

The Elephant in the Room (4:21): If there was one scene whose creation you were probably curious about, it's this one. And it's as ridiculous as you imagine, from storyboarding out each graphic shot to bringing on an Oscar winning prosthetics and special effects crew to seeing the stars and directors swimming in gallons and gallons of…stuff. This one is definitely worth watching.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

As a film, THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY is pretty bad: a lame retread of every spy cliché and story you've seen deconstructed many times before. And while Cohen's constant gross out gags reeks of desperation, darn it if most of them also aren't pretty funny. At the very least, they're memorable, which you can't say about every comedy.

Extra Tidbit: According Cohen, the special effects department created 14 tons of sperm for the movie.
