WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
This is a documentary about filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE, SIGNS, THE VILLAGE) that finds a mysterious angle on the famous directorís past and present life and runs with it. The unauthorized interviews and researching by the film crew begin to anger M. Night and his publicist. Is he really hiding some mystifying revelation about his life or is the entire documentary just baloney?
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

Itís baloney. Itís hard to imagine that the people making this fake documentary actually thought people would buy into it, especially since it keeps getting more and more supernatural and cheesy as it progresses. I actually believe they assumed the majority of people would sort of laugh it off at a certain point and just enjoy it on some corny level, which I admit I did, but not for the entire duration. The acting by a lot of the people was very shaky, particularly M. Night, and even though I think he does a good job in his movie cameos, the moments in this film when he acts as though heís getting all upset or uneasy arenít too convincing. As a publicity stunt for before the release of this past summerís THE VILLAGE, I think this was a great idea, but for any other reason, as a stand-alone film or for ďmockĒ documentary authority, itís just too plain silly and hackneyed to enjoy the whole way through.

Youíll get a few hearty laughs though, especially with Johnny Deppís scene in the film. He does a good job (playing himself) and is his believability is pretty strong. This movie is worth watching if only to see the crazy cool hat Johnnyís wearing when the film crew visits him at his room at the Chateau Marmont. I remember hearing that M came out and said at a certain point this was a publicity stunt but Iím not really in the mood to go research if thatís true or not. This 2 hour + documentary already took up enough time for me tonight. If this DVD had some extras or a commentary track that maybe explained the entire hoax or gave some more background on it all, I mightíve enjoyed it a little more, but probably not too much more. All I know is, I still have to review the horrid looking WITHOUT A PADDLE and at this point, I donít care anymore what the back-story is with this film. All I really know is itís kind of sad to see an actual documentary filmmaker, Nathaniel Kahn, waste his time doing a dinky promo gig like this after his Oscar nominated documentary MY ARCHITECT: A SONíS JOURNEY. I figured heíd have better things to doÖ

THE EXTRAS
Nada!
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Die-hard M. Night fans might eat this up as it ďuncoversĒ all kinds of parallels between the filmmakerís life and his movies, but most regular people will be bored since none of it is real. It might have been a good idea to slap this onto THE VILLAGE DVD as a second disc to use as a quirky promotional tool, but I donít think itís worth spending your rental money on it alone Ė rent DEVILíS PLAYGROUND instead!!
