WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A group of scientists discover that the Earthís core will stop spinning soon and when that happens, all hell will break loose and the world will end. They decide to send a ship down to stop the disaster. Well, we havenít had a real ďdisaster film" in a while, so this was pretty refreshing. The only difference here being that instead of Bruce Willis, we get Aaron Eckhart as the badass
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
So this is what happened to Hilary Swank! I kid of course, itís actually the cast of this film that impressed me the most. The acting was so bang-on and genuine that I actually felt bad when the bodycount started rising. Swank was cute (she has hair in this one) as a button and gave an incredibly believable performance. She was aided along by the great Delroy Lindo (why is this man still without an Oscar nomination), the brilliant Stanley Tucci, the always watchable Eckhart and the underrated French actor Tcheky Karyo. Believe you me, Iíll take this group of misfits over Affleck, Tyler and Willis any day of the week. It was also a welcome change to see the gang go deep into the earthís core instead of deep into space (yawn) like most other sci-fi duds (MISSION TO MARS, RED PLANET). This kept my interest level up seeing as it presented a different sort of challenge, an idea that hadnít been tackled much since JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.

As silly as it got sometimes, I was never bored during the film either and thatís a good sign when it comes to an escapist movie like this. That's not to say there arenít things I didnít like about the film. For example, the special effects were rotten. In this day and age, with all the advancements with FX, I donít want to spot obvious ďfakeĒ floods, or fires and what not. This was the case often in this movie and it really disappointed me. It pulled me away from the world of fantasy and chaos I was experiencing. I would have enjoyed it all much more had they thought of all the details, instead of playing it "sloppy" every now and then. I still had a good time though and the acting kept me involved so THE CORE is definitely worth checking out.
THE EXTRAS
We begin with an audio commentary by director Jon Amiel. Jonís track is very easy-going and entertaining. He comes off as a real sharp guy and his British accent is addictive. Next up, To The Core And Back - The Making Of The Core, ten minutes of the usual ins and outs of the film, cast and crew participate of course, Amiel as always, is the highlight. Then we have the Deconstruction Of The Visual Effects. This is broken down into five parts: Pre-Visualization, Trafalgar Square, Rome, The Golden Gate Bridge and The Geode. This is the same old gobbledygook about how the special effects are created and how they make those wonderful sequences work. This is cool if youíre a visual effects aficionado, but like I said, the effects arenít very convincing in the film so this just might anger you more than anything else. Finally there are 10 deleted extended/scenes with the directorís commentary. The odd thing is, they just play them back to back and you canít really choose which ones to see and in what order. In any case, there are some really emotional and important scenes that unfortunately got cut from the film that are worth checking out. A few previews and thatís all she wrote.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
THE CORE is definitely rent-worthy on one of those boring weeknights when youíve got a couple of hours to kill before you hit the sack. Youíll get your kicks and in the meantime, discover what a superb actor Aaron Eckhart is. Itíll pass the time just fine, but I canít really recommend buying it unless youíve just won the lottery or love this sort of stuff.
