WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A group of activists infiltrate the Taijii cove in Japan, where thousands of dolphins have been annually slaughtered each year for food, while others have been sold into captivity.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
THE COVE was an extremely difficult film to watch. I mean, who doesn't love dolphins, right? Well, apparently, the fishermen on the island of Taijii don't, and the absolute relish they take in slaughtering dolphins is captured here is shockingly brutal detail.

In addition to the slaughter on Taijii, many other aspects of dolphin captivity are examined, through the fascinating story of Ric O'Barry, who- before becoming a tireless dolphin activist, was initially the chief wrangler and trainer for the FLIPPER TV series in the sixties. The work made him a millionaire, but after a traumatic experience with one of the main FLIPPER dolphins, O'Barry dedicated himself to freeing all dolphins in captivity, and shutting down the slaughter on Taijii. His struggle would lead to numerous arrests, and even attempts on his life by the Whaling industry, which has billions to lose if the slaughter was ever shut down. If all this sounds like fiction, it's not, and this is a film that demands to be seen.

THE EXTRAS
THE COVE boasts an interesting slate of bonus features, including an Audio Commentary by Director and Producer , Special OPS Cameras , which examines the hidden HD cams designed to uncover the truth about the Taijii cove, Freediving - a selection of b-roll underwater shots, Deleted Scenes which run about 10 mins, and feature some celebrity activists- although these were better left out of the film I think, as one thing THE COVE didn't need to tell it's story was star power. FInally, we get an interesting mini-doc, The Cove: Mercury Rising which elaborates on the dangers of consuming dolphin meat, the Theatrical Trailer

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
THE COVE is a film that must be seen to be believed, and even the most jaded moviewatcher will find some of the disturbing imagery hard to shake for days afterwards. Worthy viewing.
