WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Based on an incredible true story, THE DANISH GIRL centers on Einar (later Lili) Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), the first transgender person to receive gender reassignment surgery. Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) is supportive of her husband Einarís transition to Lili, and stays by Liliís side throughout the entire ordeal, acting as her support system even after their marriage is over. The film is about courage and the strength to be your true self, even when it's not socially acceptable.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
A story of strength and acceptance, THE DANISH GIRL seems ripped from todayís headlines. This film had been hanging in production limbo for over a decade; at one point Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman were attached to play Gerda and Einar, respectively. But it took a time such as this, where the movement for social change and acceptance of the transgender community is at its peak, for the movie to finally get produced.

Once again, Eddie Redmayne gives a multi-dimensional, powerhouse performance. Itís amazing how he transitioned from his Oscar-winning role as Stephen Hawking in 2014ís THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING to playing Lili Wegener within a matter of months. But it is Alicia Vikander, who won an Oscar for her role, that is the emotional center of the film, acting as a representative for the audience and allowing us to see the events through her eyes. Many times, I found myself hoping that I would be as supportive as her character, Gerda. With such a powerful, gut-wrenching performance from Vikander, I would argue that the title, THE DANISH GIRL, could just as easily be referring to Gerda as it is Lili.

THE DANISH GIRL is a beautifully filmed and acted movie that has the best of intentions in mind. However, as I was watching the movie, it always felt like it was missing something. Though the performances were phenomenal, I wish the script would have delved a bit deeper into Lili's life and experiences as opposed to telling her story at face value. It felt like Hooper decided to go the more safe, mainstream route, focusing on the responsibility of getting Lily's story into the public consciousness as opposed to putting a different, original spin on the typical biopic. And while I can't really blame him for choosing to make a reserved movie, especially with such a sensitive topic at hand, the tremendous acting performances certainly overshadow the story.
THE EXTRAS
The Making Of The Danish Girl: As the only special feature on the Blu-Ray, this 11.5 minute featurette gives a quick glimpse at how the movie came together, from the genesis of the original book to the casting of Vikander and Redmayne and finally Hooper filming the movie on location in Copenhagen.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
THE DANISH GIRL brings Lili's important story of strength and courage to the big screen, informing generations of people about her trailblazing struggle for acceptance. But with the issues of a surface-level story and sparse special features, I would suggest this movie as a rental or, if you want the movie in your collection, waiting for a price drop.
