WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
When aliens attack and swiftly conquer the world by frying our electronic grid and systematically hunting down the disorganized, pathetically under-defended survivors, a small band of tourists in Moscow combine to find a way to annihilate the aliens' powerful defenses.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Alien invasion movies arenít exactly a new idea. Theyíve been around for ages and theyíve pretty well all been done before. To be fair, just about everything has been done before, but as far as the horror/thriller genre goes, again, aliens are just not a new thing. I guess THE DARKEST HOUR wanted to at least attempt to make an original alien invasion film and I applaud them for trying, but thatís pretty well where my applause for the movie ends.

THE DARKEST HOUR is a sloppily put together film from start to finish. Everything from the story to the dialogue to the acting is just exceptionally terrible. The worst performance of the entire film comes from Into The Wild actor, Emile Hirsch, whose facial expressions and faces as he tries to depict various emotions is laughable. It doesnít help that Hirschís dialogue for the movie was by far the worst. The other actors may have been given equally terrible dialogue to work with, but Hirsch is the one who seems to really give emphasis to just how terrible it really is.

The special effects for the movie arenít by any means terrible, but theyíre meant to be the films saving grace and I canít even tell people that itís worth watching for that reason alone, because itís really not.
THE EXTRAS
Survivors: I actually enjoyed this special feature more than the movie itself. Itís a short film that shows what happens in other places around the world after the alien invasion. It shows people learning how to fight back and to take back the Earth.

Visualizing an Invasion: A feature that takes you behind the scenes of the special effects. Itís pretty in-depth and gave me a little more appreciation for how the movie came together in that sense.

Deleted and Extended Scenes: A very short set of extra scenes. They were mostly cut out for good reason and definitely didnít add anything else to the film overall.

And the last feature thatís included with THE DARKEST HOUR Blu-ray is an Audio Commentary.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
THE DARKEST HOUR was not meant to be a funny movie (or at least I donít think it was). After sitting through the entire thing, the best thing that I can take away from the film is that itís kind of hilarious to watch with a group of friends. Get everyone to take a drink every time something ridiculous happens. Spoiler alert: youíre going to get wasted.
