WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A 40 year old ex-Golden Gloves champ with an unstable job as a carpenter finds himself fighting in the Olympic trials.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Its not necessarily a bad movie as much as you really have to be a fan of Adam Carolla to begin with. But I think even if you are a fan, the film comes off as too self-involved for Carolla. The movies loosely based on his life so maybe thats why. Being that Im a fan of his and know his background, I did enjoy the movie as a whole. For those not aware, a young Carolla was a Golden Gloves champ and carpenter before hitting the big time. Theres something about that all too clich story of regular guy makes good that never gets old. Its relatable and inspiring to see someone work their whole life and finally get a break.

As for the movie itself, I wondered throughout the whole thing why the hell this thing got an R-rating. Theres no nudity and counted maybe two fucks throughout the whole movie. The word fuck not the act of. For all intents and purposes, its a pretty harmless flick. Carolla is Carolla. His acting leaves something to be desired but you know not to expect Pacino in the Godfather when seeing him in a movie. The boxing comes off pretty realistic and the relationship angle with Carolla and the chick is believable. The story reminded me a lot of movies like Big Daddy and Dirty Work: 40 year old loser whos not moving on with next part of his life, but in the end, those movies were much funnier. All in all, not a bad little movie. Oh yeah, Ozzie rules!
THE EXTRAS
Commentary with Adam Carolla and writer/co-producer Kevin Hench: All this did was make me miss Carolla on Loveline. Or that I lived in L.A. to listen to his show. Earlier I mentioned the reason for an R-rating and its discussed with as much confusion as I had here. The boys have a good back and forth and Carolla keeps things light and funny.

Deleted Scenes: Some really funny stuff here that I wished were in the movie.

Outtakes: Some minor flubs and multiple takes here.

A Conversation With Adam & Ozzie: A pretty cool feature between Adam and his long time friend and partner in crime in the movie, Ozzie. Ozzie talks (in broken English) about how he met Carolla and how he made it to L.A. after claiming political asylum in Nicaragua.

Behind the Scenes Promotional Segments: 6 different promotional spots that act as a behind-the-scenes feature. Each spot is a couple minutes long. Nothing groundbreaking here.

Ozzies ADR Session: Adam helps Ozzie through some voice over dialogue. Pretty funny if you like hearing flubs in broken English. Theatrical Trailer

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
If you liked movies like Beer League, Big Daddy and Dirty Work, youll enjoy The Hammer. If you like boxing mixed in with some humor from Adam Carolla, youll enjoy The Hammer. Not exactly laugh out loud funny, but a light humorous movie that despite the R-rating, you can watch with your underage girlfriend.
