WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Taking the concept of the beloved classic TV show THE HONEYMOONERS (1955), Paramount decided that we need an updated film version in which Jackie Gleason is black. Unremarkably, the film has reached IMDB’s bottom 100 list.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I hope we see an end to the disturbing trend of terribly re-making every classic television show over the last several years. Believe me when I say that THE HONEYMOONERS (2005) isn’t as bad as it should be. At best, it’s an average comedy and does retain the same formula the classic show had, despite what some may say. That they made the original white characters black isn’t all that bad either. In fact, it works decently. The reason this movie failed and others like it, is because moviegoers demand better. We WANT originality, not to be reminded of how great things WERE. As far as catering to black audiences, Chris Rock said it best, “What do black people get? Barbershop 2. We get all the bad movies!”

THE HONEYMOONERS (‘05) serves really as an embarrassment to fans of the show and to Paramount. The director pushes stereotypes so much that they become stupid or uncomfortable. The movie seems better fit as an shameless television show on UPN more than a movie event. I think the cast did what they could but you can have a cast but unless you have a good direction, there’s not movie. Please, no more!
THE EXTRAS
Commentary by Director John Schultz and Actors Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps: By and large this is nothing special. John Schultz seems to know what he’s doing (or not) but what makes this track blaze’ is Cedric and Mike’s gangster “yeahs” every few seconds. “yeah, yeah.”

Hanging With The Honeymooners: This 14 minute EPK is just what you’d expect. Lots of butt kissing with little explanations about making the movie. All self-reflection.

Deleted/Extended/Alternate Scenes: Most of these are just plain boring. The one exception is an extended phone sequence with Cedric the Entertainer that’s downright hilarious because it’s so real.

Interstitials: I hate to say it but these two interstitials are pretty damn funny! Remember those FIGHT CLUB PSAs? You get the idea.

Theatrical Trailer: I remember when I originally saw this trailer and cried.

There’s also a collection of movie previews.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
THE HONEYMOONERS (’05) is a movie that should have never been made plain and simple. I can’t speak for everyone but I find it hard to imagine anyone finding a good amount of entertainment value. Add to that, a mediocre DVD and have a classic stinker.
