Years later, Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and his partner, Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi), become famous magicians at Bally’s in Las Vegas. After a decade performing the same acts, their “magical friendship” comes to a halt after Wonderstone’s ego starts to take center stage—and with hair like that, who can blame him?
Enter street performer and the host of Brain Rapist, Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), who is taking Wonderstone’s audience by staging mental feats like holding his urine for 12 days, which apparently passes as amusement in the Entertainment Capital of the World. With the help of his idol (Alan Arkin), Wonderstone tries to get his act together and get his name back on the marquee.
Where The Incredible Burt Wonderstone lacks verbal jokes, it tries to make up in sight humor, here done with goofy haircuts/facial hair and silly voices (which just aren’t enough to grab consistent laughs, no matter what Will Ferrell tries to tell you). Despite a handful of funny bits (like Wonderstone’s trip to the nursing home), there is little in the movie, directed by TV veteran Don Scardino and written by Horrible Bosses’ team of John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein, that will tickle you anymore than what was shown in the trailers.
The greatest flaws come in the leads. No matter how much you may like Carell and Carrey (and I certainly do), it’s gotten to the point where it’s impossible to deny that the former is a disappointing leading man and Carrey is past his prime. Here is a concept that may have worked better about a decade ago, when The Office was first airing, Carrey was on his second comedic wind and Daly and Goldstein hadn’t yet ventured into screenwriting.
