Prior to watching this film, that quote from WHAT ABOUT BOB? was the only association I had with Neil Diamond. I dug PURPLE RAIN and 8 MILE so I was interested to see if Mr. Sweet Caroline himself could pull off his own struggling musician movie. Sadly to say, this movie was heavy on the cheese and the music didnít carry it as far for me as it may have for others. I think thatís the key, if you like Neil Diamondís tunes, then youíll enjoy the film. Otherwise you might want to let this one stay in the Ď80s.
This is one of those movies that offers so many opportunities for ridicule that Iím actually struggling on where to start. I figure itís made it through a theatrical distribution and countless home video releases that it obviously has a fan base. The last thing I need is all seven Neil Diamond fans sending me nasty hate mail.
The biggest question I have is why in the world would they call this THE JAZZ SINGER? It bares no resemblance to the Al Jolson movie by the same name and not once do we hear jazz music.
