WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A young rising star in the world of professional golf (Matt Damon) is forced to abandon his career in order to fight in the war. He returns from the battlefield trenches a broken man, walking away from the game of golf and turning to alcohol. After a 10-year absence, a special exhibition match draws him out of retirement as he regains his swing with the help of a mysterious caddie (Will Smith).
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
While this isnít a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, it doesnít present anything to be overly enthusiastic about either. I spent two hours watching this movie and basically walked away from it shrugging my shoulders, wondering what exactly the point of the whole thing was. The characters had very little depth to them and beyond Matt Damonís journey into redemption, I really could care less or feel anything for any of the others. While it does present an interesting mix of comedy and drama, the whole story itself is blatantly predictable and doesnít exactly throw the viewer for any surprises. I mean, give us something to work with! About halfway through, I actually started wondering why this film wasnít made into a ďmade for TVĒ movie, thatís how flat and unspectacular it was.

But while the story and characters left a lot to be desired, I have to take my hat off to Robert Redford for shooting a beautiful looking film with great visuals. You donít have to be Tiger Woods to appreciate the incredible cinematography featured in this flick. The sweeping shots of the golf courses are grand in scope and at some points, absolutely breathtaking. With that having been said, we all know that style and visuals can only take a movie so far before the shiny exterior starts to fall apart. Thatís pretty much all you need to know about the movie. Granted I was entertained and enjoyed the whole golf versus life parallel, but believe most viewers will walk away from this one feeling empty and unsatisfied. Itís basically middle of the road fare which could go either way and will probably be more appreciated by golfing enthusiasts.
THE EXTRAS
Given that this movie didnít exactly produce outstanding numbers at the box office, it really doesnít surprise me that the added features for the DVD are quite crappy and short in length. First up is ďRobert Redford: Insight into The Legend of Bagger VanceĒ which clocks in at a laughable 4 minutes. Itís basically a slide show of still images from the movie with Redford narrating about his environmentalist beliefs and how the uplifting and nostalgic story drove him to make the movie. We also learn that he was driven by the backdrop of the movie and how golf serves as a model for they way we live our lives.

Next up is ďProduction FeaturetteĒ, a measly 3.5 minute behind-the-scenes look featuring 20-second clips of Damon, Smith, Theron and Redford interspliced with brief scenes from the movie. To be honestly blunt, this is unquestionably one of the worst extras Iíve ever seen on a DVD. It's way too brief and barely scratches the surface of the movie. Finishing up the bonus department is the theatrical and teaser trailers as well as some outlining production notes. While the special features on the disc completely suck, Iím pleased to report that it does feature some great menus, complete with snippets of the score and complete animation.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
If thereís one word that would best sum up this release, it would definitely be mediocre. Itís basically a mixed bag of a so-so film, great video quality and some very sorry excuses for bonus materials. If you can appreciate great direction and cinematography, by all means give this one a spin but Iíd recommend you go in with lowered expectations. If you find yourself absolutely desperate for a rental on a Saturday night, Iíd have second thoughts about picking this one up. Itís a borderline pick.
