WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) is recruited by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), a freedom fighter who reveals that the world Neo thinks hes living in is nothing but an artificial reality called The Matrix- the creation of the machines that now rule humanity. Morpheus believes Neo is The One a long foretold warrior wholl free humanity from its enslavement.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Where STAR WARS was the formative movie going experience that tied together most fanboys, for the younger generation of fans, including myself, Id say THE MATRIX was a comparable experience. I still remember seeing this film on Easter Weekend, 1999- just a few months before I graduated high school. I walked in expecting something like JOHNNY MNEMONIC 2, but was instead rewarded with a sci-fi action experience that blew my adolescent mind.

THE MATRIX was the first DVD I ever bought, and for me has always been one of those formative films of my youth. This led to me checking out the films of John Woo, and Yuen Woo-Ping, and is totally responsible for my love of Asian action films. While its legacy was badly diminished by the horrible sequels (which I will not even try to defend, as theyre just as atrocious as people say), the original film is still a masterpiece of its genre and holds up remarkably well.

Watching this film really takes me into a time warp, as I lived and breathed this film for most of 99/00. The soundtrack was constantly in my discman (remember those?), and to this day I can still recite all the words to Marilyn Mansons Rock is Dead (ROCK!!! Is deader than dead!!! The shock!!! Is all in your HEAD!!!).

I really love this film, and there havent really been any big event blockbuster other than the Nolan BATMANs that have entertained me in the same way. I still get a chill when Neo faces off with Agent Smith in a subway tunnel towards the end, and the bullet dodging on the rooftop was one of the great WTF? moments of action cinema.
THE EXTRAS
This is the same loaded blu-ray that was in the trilogy box-set, and got a single disc release for the tenth anniversary in 2009. The only difference is that this has a steelbox cover, and is an Amazon.ca exclusive for the time being.

First up are the audio commentaries including the track by Carrie-Anne Moss, John Gaeta, and the Don Davis music only-track with commentary - both of which were on the original 2000 DVD. Also ported over from the DVD is the Follow The White Rabbit Behind The Matrix HBO documentary, and the Take The Red Pill documentary gallery New for the blu-ray (but including in the box set and original blu-ray) is another commentary, called The Philosophers Commentary featuring a bunch of academics who debate the philosophy of the film. We also get the feature length Matrix Revisited documentary, which got its own DVD release back in 2000. Dont expect too much from the Wachowskis, as they were reclusive even back then. Also ported over from THAT disc is The Music Revisited a galley of all the musical cues for the documentary. Finally theres the Marilyn Manson Rock is Dead music video , and the trailers and TV spots .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
If you dont already own THE MATRIX on blu-ray, this is a must have, and Im thrilled to finally have it. I already own the whole trilogy on HD-DVD (remember that), but this is handy, as I have no interest in ever revisiting the sequels, and this helps me pretend they dont exist.

I remember having to buy a brand new dvd player when my old one (7 months) wouldn't play The Matrix DVD. It was worth it me thinks.

since you reviewed a blu-ray

...how is the actual video/audio? I don't care about the specs... how does it look?

Nice to see it's still getting re-releases. This is one movie I won't complain about seeing a new release of every few years. It's just a shame that this franchise isn't continuing strong like Star Wars is. We really need to see some new stuff from this franchise.
