Francis Ford Coppola
C. Thomas Howell
Probably one of the most standout aspects of the movie is the cast. The list of actors is amazing, including such greats as Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Ralph Macchio. Now THAT’S a cast! Granted, most of them are side characters, but it’s pretty cool to see them nonetheless. Besides, the movie really is about the characters anyway, so it’s only right that memorable actors such as these were selected for the roles.
THE OUTSIDERS really was made for teens. It’s about the emotions and problems of teens, and how they’re forced into different groups branded with labels, and the like. The story is overblown, and is at times more like a soap opera than a film, but the ideas are there, and it shows. I wouldn’t call it a classic like so many others, but I certainly appreciate the effort, and you should too.
Commentary (with director Francis Ford Coppola): This is an excellent track accompanied by an equally informative intro. Coppola is very personable and has plenty of interesting things to talk about. He discusses the movie’s development, cast, story, and more. Check it out.
Commentary (with the greasers and a soc): The speakers here are Howell, Macchio, Swayze, and Lane, with Lowe and Dillon being spliced in through a different recording. While Coppola’s commentary is great through an informative standpoint, this one is great for a different reason. The speakers discuss their many memories working of the film, and then talk about how they’ve matured and developed as actors over the years. Very interesting.
Stay Gold: A Look Back at The Outsiders (26:24): A simple, engaging and mildly informative featurette filled with interviews. Various members of the cast discuss their very unique past experiences working on THE OUTSIDERS.
S.E. Hinton on Location in Tulsa (7:33): This featurette allows viewers to see the author of the novel, as well as why certain locations where chosen for shooting. Very cool.
The Casting of The Outsiders (13:57): This cool extra includes information on (obviously) the casting of the movie, but also some interesting audition footage of the actors.
Readings (7:23): Sort of pointless extra that has a number of the actors (Lowe, Swayze, Howell, Dillon, Macchio, Garrett & Lane) reading snippets of the book.
NBC News Today Segment (4:44): This is a story about how the movie was started simply by a petition from a group of school kids in an English class. Nothing new, but somewhat amusing to watch.
Additional Scenes: There are 6 scenes, most of which run around 1-2 minutes. As soon as they play, you will know why they were cut. The main thing I noticed is that some of them were so much more explicit about the ideas from the story, ruining the fun.
Also included are the Original Theatrical Trailer and DVD Credits.
Even though I don’t outright love THE OUTSIDERS, I do like it quite a bit - certainly enough to recommend a rental. And in the case of THE COMPLETE NOVEL edition, even a purchase. I don’t normally suggest double dipping for DVDs, but for this specific case, I can make an exception.
