THE PEACEMAKER is so much more than the generic action-thriller I was expecting. Visually speaking, the film is just stunningly composed. The camera almost never stops moving. These aren't shitty cuts to cover lazy action either, there are some gorgeous long takes all throughout the movie. The action scenes are fantastic (and you can even see everything that's happening in them!) and since this movie came out before CGI came into heavy use, there are some actual stunts. Great ones too. I'm stunned the director, Mimi Leder, could really only turn this into two more big gigs (DEEP IMPACT and PAY IT FORWARD), because she damn sure knows what's she's doing.
Clooney absolutely kills his role. The man is just so damn likable and charismatic that you buy him as the bad-ass who gets shit done. All the actors besides Clooney and Kidman are pretty much unknowns and all hold their own.
The only real negative thing I can say is that time has not been kind to certain aspects of the film. There are AOL references, awful hair and Nicole Kidman wears more pleated pantsuits than I have fingers. Thoughts of the 9/11 attacks also took me out of the final scenes a bit but that's not the movie's fault.
One last thing, look out for what I now believe to be the two greatest "jumping away from explosions" scenes ever filmed. Particularly the second one, which is all the right kinds of insane.
