WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Six high school kids (the stoner, the ball player, the intelligent prude, the rebel and two extremely boring guys) cook up a plan to steal the test results to the S.A.T. exams. They all have their own reasons for needing to pass this exam and theyre all stuck in a movie directed by that guy who played Eric on TV's "Head of the Class".
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
For an MTV-produced teen flick, this movie has as much edge as a Jay Leno monologue. Its easy to see why it was shelved for so many years. Im assuming the reason they finally released it was because the two girls in the film are now pretty famous: Scarlett Johansson and Erika Christensen (TRAFFIC, SWIMFAN). I give the movie points for a) having the weird looking, yet strangely attractive and sexy, Christensen in it and b) for using Afromans song "Because I Got High" in it. Thats about it. As mentioned in my plot outline, the two main dudes have as much personality as actor Matthew Modine, but with worse haircuts. As far as the laughs go there werent any. The only times a smile even remotely crept onto my face was whenever the Asian stoner, Leonardo Lam, appeared on screen. He wasnt necessarily funny, but he was the only interesting character in the movie. And oh yeah...fasten your seatbelts, this is yet another movie that does a lame MATRIX spoof

Its kind of sad because you can tell the filmmakers tried going for that THE BREAKFAST CLUB vibe, but needless to say, failed miserably. The heist scenes, while not entirely boring, werent really engaging either, they just kind of passed the time before you got to the twist ending which was about as shocking as a Robert Downey Jr. drug relapse. I guess you can tell by now that Im using this review to try out some new one-liners-- after seeing a movie lacking in both excitement and fun, I figured Id try to make some of my own. If MTV wants people to go see their teen flicks and they dont have an original spin on it, they better make damn sure they at least get some T&A in there for the kids. Damn...even SWIMFAN had the common sense to slap a bikini onto Erika!
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentary by Director Brian Robbins and co-screenwriter Mark Schwahn: Robbins is just as cool as he was on HEAD OF THE CLASS. I still find it odd to see him as a man now, directing major motion pictures. Anyway, Brian and Mark have pretty good chemistry going on here and aside from a few lulls, this is an okay commentary track. Average, I would say.

Making of The Perfect Score (21 minutes) : The usual 'making-of' stuff, but what makes this one worth watching is seeing the actor who played the stoner in the movie speaking with a very proper British accent. It was also cool to see what 'Eric' looked like now.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Bah, forget renting this flick and go get yourself a fresh copy of THE BREAKFAST CLUB instead. Youll get less lame heist, more teen angst and some Ringwald and Estevez to boot. And all will be right with the world again
