WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Several years after the events of THE PURGE: ANARCHY, Leo (Frank Grillo) attempts to protect a presidential candidate (Elizabeth Mitchell) who plans on ending the purge once and for all - providing she can survive the night a live to be elected.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I must admit I was surprised by THE PURGE: ANARCHY. The original film had a fun idea but was essentially torture porn. However, writer-director James DeMonaco, in a bold move, tried something different for the sequel, downplaying the horror, making it more of an exploitation-style action film, the kind that would have done someone like Roger Corman proud.

It also gave star Frank Grillo a good action vehicle in which he was able to show some impressive action chops, and he's back for the sequel. Like the last one, it's more of an action film, with very little horror other than some splatter scenes. This did boffo business at the box-office, with the election plot being perfectly tied into the malaise many feel at the moment. Likewise, the home video release is timed to take advantage of the imminent election and it can't be denied this fives the film a little extra kick.

As in the last movie, Grillo's in fine form, although despite having a healthier budget this time, De Monaco's action scenes aren't quite as strong as they were in ANARCHY, although the premise is good. Mitchell, from "Lost" is likable as Grillo's co-lead. Still, until the grand googol finish there's an absence of really memorable set pieces, save for a briefly inspired bit where a bunch of murderous teenyboppers murder people to Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA."
THE EXTRAS
Deleted Scenes: Eight minutes worth - mostly scene extensions with a little extra gore during a montage of purge activity.

Inside THE PURGE: A barely there, five minute electronic press kit with taking heads and behind the scenes footage.

Character Spotlight: Leo A short but cool piece highlighting Frank Grillo's evolution into an action hero, with emphasis on the (sweet) climatic knife-fight between him and one of the henchmen.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Overall, THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR falls, for me anyways, between the first and second films. It's entertaining and smarter than you'd think, but better action beats would have really put this over the top and helped it break out of the b-movie ghetto.
