WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A newly divorced woman moves to New York City with her two children in an attempt to move on with her life, only to get sidetracked when she starts dating her nanny—a young man 15 years her junior.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Considering THE REBOUND has sat on the shelf since 2009, you might be expecting the worst, but, if anything, this isn’t your stereotypical romantic comedy. For what could essentially be COUGAR: THE MOVIE, the film doesn’t reinvent the genre, but also manages to avoid most of the usual trappings.

With the age difference between the two leads and the subject matter, THE REBOUND doesn’t shy away from goofy twinges of THE GRADUATE. Both follow people clumsily trying to find their way through life. There’s Catherine Zeta Jones’ newly single mother of two, trying to move on without her cheating ex-husband, as well as Justin Bartha’s insecure Jewish kid who gets paid to be a literal punching bag at a women’s self-defense class. The characters, though familiar, are written pretty well for their situation. It’s of course idealized stuff for a mass audience, but their relationship and motivation are at least fairly realistic. There’s love, dysfunction, and a young guy trying to find life’s answers in Mrs. Michael Douglas’ pants.

The one thing that doesn’t work is the movie’s very strange sense of humor, especially for a romantic comedy. There’s some very strange stuff that just feels tonally off, including:
-The father, played by Art Garfunkel (!) having surgery to give himself a new butthole
-A blind date with “Dukes of Hazzard” star John Schneider as a very hands-on chiropractor who has a strained conversation with Zeta Jones from inside a Port-a-Potty
-A homeless man flashing his very long, skinny penis at the children (Yes, they show it.)
-Jones’ bizarre children. The little girl kills squirrels and harvests their organs for fun. The boy plays “pimps and ho’s” with his fellow grade school classmates.

While the movie as a whole is nothing more than generic, without going in to spoiler territory, it does end up being a bizarrely different film than you’re expecting. I don’t know if attempting something mature and different is enough to recommend seeking out the film, but it’s not as terrible it could’ve been.
THE EXTRAS
Cast and Crew Interviews (24:36): Pretty much each member of the team (even Art Garfunkel!) discusses their characters and what drew them to the movie in separate interviews.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Though it remains fairly mediocre, THE REBOUND aspires to be something different than the average rom-com. So I guess points for trying?

Extra Tidbit: Director Bart Freundlich is married to Julianne Moore.
