WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A young doctor (Hilary Swank), reeling from a bad breakup, moves into a swanky New York loft. Too bad for her, the initially appealing landlord (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), turns out to be a complete psychopath, who's lured her into the loft, plotting to make her his love slave.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
THE RESIDENT is Hammer Studios forst film in years, and the beginning of a new wave of small-scale horror movies, hopefully similar to the type they made in their heyday. Sadly, THE RESIDENT doesn`t even come close to measuring up to any of their classics, with this being virtually indistinguishable from an B-grade horror flick to hit theaters in the last few years.

That said, I'm still surprised THE RESIDENT got sent straight to DVD, considering the fact that it stars multiple Oscar-winner, Hilary Swank, and up-and-coming leading man Jeffrey Dean Morgan. While it's nothing special, it's certainly no worse than something like the recent STEPFATHER remake. All in all, I'm surprised this wasn't picked up by one of the genre-heavy studios, like Lionsgate, Screen Gems or Dark Castle.

As it is, THE RESIDENT is probably good enough for hard-core horror fans, and it's a slick flick, with an obviously healthy budget. While the story is totally by-the-numbers, it's reasonably entertaining throughout. It also features a good, creepy performance from Morgan, who's mostly known for his recent action roles in WATCHMEN, and THE LOSERS. This is an interesting change of pace- it's just too bad he didn't have a better showcase for his talent. Hammer icon Christopher Lee also has a nice little role as Morgan's similarly insane Grandpa- which is just about the only Hammer nod you'll get here.
THE EXTRAS
Nada- justs the trailer .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
While it's not a great film, THE RESIDENT is passable entertainment, and might make an OK rental for horror buffs. At least the production value, and the cast are top-notch. Too bad the script wasn't more creative, as this might have been more than just another by-the-numbers yuppie thriller.
