WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Everybody’s favorite former wrestler, The Rock, is sent into the jungles of Brazil to collect the son of his rich boss. Once he gets there, he runs into a zany, over-the-top stereotypical bad guy. And who else could that be but the legendary Chris Walken. Oh yeah, and Rosario Dawson shows up as a ridiculously boring rebel leader as well.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
What do you get when you mix a pinch of Stifler in the jungle, some Walken doing his best campy “Walken” impersonation, a touch of Rosario Dawson with a laughably bad accent and a tinge of The goddamn Rock? You get a pretty rockin’ action flick, that’s what! Seriously folks, The Rock is easily the coolest son of a bitch to appear in an action movie in a long time. I’d gladly take a savage beating from the man any day of the week. He is that cool! His charisma and relaxed demeanor alone are enough to merit you renting THE RUNDOWN. The minus? Stifler’s lame gags get a bit tiresome at times and Rosario Dawson doesn’t help matters much by trying to be the “sex object” (with a horrific accent to boot). Also, she has as much believability as a leader of a group of rebels as Courtney Love has as a caring, capable mother.

But none of that will matter much because as soon as The Rock steps up and begins to punish the poor souls standing in his way, you’ll forget about Dawson, Stifler and the 45 or so aerial shots of the jungle the director drops on you. That isn’t to say the director doesn’t do a good job. The action sequences are among the most creative and eye-pleasing I’ve seen in a while. Okay, the bottom line is this, THE RUNDOWN isn’t the most intelligent action/adventure romp you’ll see, but it knows that and instead tries to entertain you with some fun battles, quick pacing and more than a few lines that’ll have you busting your nuts (oops, guts) in laughter. It helps that Walken has some of the funniest one-liners I’ve ever heard. Honestly, my first viewing of this film was at the cinema and The Rock hooked me in right away. In fact, since that fateful night, I’ve been hounding big boss man JoBlo for an invite to the premiere of WALKING TALL (it’s next week, by the way, and I’m still waiting for my answer). The point is, I was converted to a Rock fan very easily, and I’m positive the man can do the same for you…
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentary by director Peter Berg and The Rock: If you didn’t already think The Rock was the coolest guy in the world than listen to this commentary track and that should do the trick. It helps that director Peter Berg (also responsible for the underrated and misunderstood classic VERY BAD THINGS) chimes in with the man and lets us in on some fun behind the scenes stuff. Like I said, everything The Rock touches turns to gold and this audio track is no exception.

Audio Commentary by Producers Kevin Misher and Marc Abraham: Well, this track had a tough act to follow considering it comes after Berg’s and Rock’s. Still, for more tidbits on how the film was put together, these guys reveal tons of cool info. It seems everybody had a blast working with The Rock. No kidding…

Rumble in the Jungle: This feature delves into the stunts and stuntmen involved with THE RUNDOWN. I wasn’t surprised to hear that The Rock did a lot of his own stunts and did anything he could as to not cheat the audience of a realistic looking action sequence. What a great guy!!

The Amazon, Hawaii Style: How they transformed a Hawaiian paradise into a Brazilian jungle to shoot THE RUNDOWN. The cast & crew all share their experience with us.

Appetite For Destruction: If you’re curious as to how the visual effects and crashes and bashes all came to be, this feature should please you greatly. This stuff usually ends up boring me to tears though…

The Rundown Uncensored: Hee hee. This is a cute little feature that explores the juicy behind-the-scenes gossip that involved the steamy relationship between The Rock and Camilla, one of the baboons featured in the film. Arnie can remain governor for all I care. The Rock has a great sense of humor and this feature proves it!

Running Down the Town: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! The production designer fills us in on how they created the Brazilian village in the film.

Walken’s World: Thank God they made an extra featuring this comic genius. “That’s a lot of cows!” Peter Berg expands on the classic Walken one-liners in the film and The Rock also shares his admiration and respect for the man. It’s also nice to hear a lot of those hilarious lines again. Like I said, a brilliant idea for an extra feature. Walken the Great is also interviewed.

8 Deleted Scenes: These just play automatically, back to back. They aren’t titled or numbered or anything. The last one with Walken is probably the funniest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. I’m still laughing…

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
You guys can easily get the missus to go along with renting this “dumb” action flick since every woman I know is positively bonkers over The Rock. And for those of you that like your action films covered in cheese from top to bottom, this will make a great addition to the action section in your DVD collection - right next to COBRA, CON AIR and BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Bring on the mozzarella, baby…
