WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A lifelong daydreamer (Stiller) with nothing interesting about his life is given the chance to go on the adventure of his life looking for a missing photo negative.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) doesnít have a very interesting life. Itís so dull that he canít even complete an eHarmony profile. He hasnít been anywhere or done anything. Heís saved dogs from exploding buildings, heís created famous sculptures, heís cracked up an elevator full of peopleóbut itís all in his head.

Walter works in the photography department of Life magazine. Itís there that he first developed a crush on colleague Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), whose online dating profile is well worth a ďwink.Ē One day at work, Walter receives a gift package from photojournalist Sean OíConnell (Sean Penn) containing an inscribed wallet and a collection of negatives. Itís negative 25 that OíConnell thinks will be perfect for the cover of the magazineís last issueóitís also missing. This allows Walter the chance for an adventure that relies less on his vivid imagination than being proactive.

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY is based on James Thurberís 1939 short story of the same name, which was first adapted into a 1947 Danny Kaye movie. While screenwriter Steve Conrad has veered significantly from Thurberís story, it only seems fitting that, considering the fantasy element, his imagination should be allowed to spin so much from the original.

In addition to playing the title character, Stiller also serves as director. His previous works include 2008ís TROPIC THUNDER, 1996ís THE CABLE GUY and his debut, 1994ís REALITY BITES, but THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY is certainly his most ambitious to date.

But it is not without its problems. The biggest issue is that the movie never really settles on a tone. There are some genuinely nice moments peppered throughout (Wiig singing ďSpace OddityĒ), but then there are moments of complete absurdity (Walter and Stretch Armstrong battling a jerky bigwig played by Adam Scott like Marvel superheroes; Walter imagining himself as a Benjamin Button type) that seem better fit for a cartoon or a bad parody.

While THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY is unbalanced, it is still very sweet and likeable, and can be enjoyed by about any age level. Credit there goes to Stiller, who clearly has a special spot for the character, story and themes.

THE EXTRAS
Behind the Scenes: There are nine featurettes here: The History of Walter Mitty (3:39), The Look of Life (5:01), Thatís a Shark! (5:57), The Music of Walter Mitty (4:01), Icelandic Adventure (3:26), Nordic Casting (3:51), Titles of Walter Mitty (2:49), Sights and Sounds of Production (2:22; 2:48) and Pre-Vis (4:15). This is a solid collection of featurettes that, instead of focusing entirely on the major cast and plot, explore topics such as the initial story and its author, the foreign locales, the work of key crew members (such as composer Theodore Shapiro), lesser established cast members and more.

Deleted, Extended and Alternate Scenes: This collection of five Deleted Scenes (7:30), two Extended Scenes (4:33) and two Alternate Scenes (3:42) donít add much to the story or characters, but will be of interest to those that enjoyed THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY.
