Jean-Claude Van Damme
Natalie J. Robb
For each of these direct-to-video movies starring washed up action stars I should just write “See previous review” because they’re all the same. I swear; this is the third move I’ve reviewed in as many weeks where an ex-soldier/cop comes to a small town, clashes with the locals and fights bad guys.
Van Damme looks old and weathered, but he still has some fight left in him. Unfortunately he doesn’t get to display this much in THE SHEPHERD, which has maybe one decent fight in the entire hour and a half. And even then, most of the “action” is just Van Dammage kicking people in slow motion while they somersault through the air unnaturally. So that leaves you with a bland and unexciting plot and some pretty terrible drama. The main character’s real motive for joining the border patrol and taking down the drug cartel is ridiculously dumb, even by B-movie standards. Let’s just say it involves Van Damme carrying a bunny rabbit around with him the entire damn movie.
Extra Tidbit: At least the man’s next movie looks somewhat interesting.
