WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In Ancient Egypt, Pharaoh orders the first born sons of all Hebrew slaves to be killed. One woman saves her son by setting him afloat among the reeds, where he's found by the Pharaoh's daughter, and raised as her son. Years later, Moses (Charlton Heston) is first in line for the throne, but the Pharaoh's natural born son, Ramses (Yul Brynner) is jealous and exposes Moses as the son of Hebrew slaves. He's exiled, but after an encounter with the almighty, he returns to Egypt to free his people.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS is the type of epic religious tale Hollywood just doesn't make any more. Granted, in our increasingly secular society, these films are a bit out of style, but no matter your beliefs, it's hard not to respect a grand film like THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

As a big fan of old-Hollywood, this is a film I've seen numerous times. While better epics, both religious (BEN-HUR) and non (SPARTACUS, EL CID) were made around this time, non seem to have endured like this one- thanks in no small part to the fact that ABC still airs this movie each and every Easter Sunday. By now, few film fans haven't seen this, and while Cecil B. DeMille has never been my favourite old-time director, you have to admire the pageantry and scope of the film- which runs close to four hours.

Probably the two biggest assets the film has are it's leading men- Heston and Brynner. No one has ever been able to carry an epic like the larger than life Heston (with his performance in Anthony Mann's brilliant EL CID being a personal favourite of mine), and it's impossible to think of anyone else as Moses. As for Brynner, he makes a memorable, bald-headed baddie, although his true genius is even more evident in latter films like THE KING & I, and the legendary THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, where his dressed-in-black anti-hero totally changed the look and personality of all Western heroes to follow.

THE EXTRAS
Sadly, there's not much here other than a commentary track from Katherine Orrision, DeMille's biographer. There's also some vintage newsreel footage and the trailers. There's a gift set out there with a lot more special features, but the version I was sent was the movie-only edition.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
This is a no-brainer for old-school Hollywood fans such as myself. While I'm more eager to get my hands on BEN-HUR (coming soon), I still enjoyed revisiting DeMille's old classic. Well worth buying.
