WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
FDR and Tuck are CIA agents and best friends, but due to their job neither of them have hit the jackpot where love is concerned. FDR suggest that Tuck try a dating site, the same advice Lauren's sister gives her due to similar job arrangements. Things get taken to the next level as Tuck and FDR find out they're both dating Lauren and rather than one back down, both guys go to war.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Initially I remember watching the trailer and thinking "this looks cool" as they showcased Chris Pine and Tom Hardy as James Bond-like CIA agents who also happen to be best buds, then came the twist: this isn't a buddy cop comedy, it's a romantic comedy with Reese Witherspoon trying to come between them. And my excitement instantly vanished like it had never been. I know, don't judge a book, blah, blah, blah, but needless to say I went into this with zero enthusiasm and zero expectations. The verdict? It actually wasn't that bad.

Being a fan Pine and Hardy surely doesn't hurt (I can't stand Reese Witherspoon though), and their camaraderie and shenanigans make for some solid laughs. I don't care much for the premise of one chick dating two dudes (whether they know about it or not), especially when it's one of those stories where you know it'll come between them. There's plenty of fish in the sea people, it's just a fact of life, I've never seen the need to date any of my buddies ex-girls and the same went for them, so stuff like this has no bite for me. That said, as a guy I'm also not impressed by how a chick dating two dudes is considered "funny", whereas a dude dating two chicks would be considered "a dick movie". Nothing like the old double standard.

One thing I did like (and was a little surprised by) was just how funny these two are together. Like we saw with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, Pine and Hardy too are a damn funny duo (I know Pine was funny as Captain Kirk but this is a little different). Each guy sets up surveillance on the other's dates, so they see and hear everything that's going on, so when Lauren's talking to her best friend about their faults (Tuck being British, and FDR's small T-Rex hands), I was in stitches. Also, Reese's best friend Trish (Chelsea Handler) is an absolute riot, definitely one of the film's best attributes. Although I will say the "Cheetos sex scene" was more than my poor retinas bargained for.

THIS MEANS WAR isn't the smartest setup, nor is it the most clever, but there's enough entertainment to merit a watch because of the strong cast, numerous laughs and the ability to make such a weak plot work on so many levels (it's not as easy as you'd think). I can't help but feel bad for Til Schweiger, on board as the "token vengeful baddy who pops up at the last minute to..." you get the idea. Poor guy, after his revival performance in INGLORIOUS BASTARDS I thought we'd be seeing more of him. Well, at least this was better than showing up as one of the elite call-dudes in DEUCE BIGALOW EUROPEAN GIGOLO. I bet that's one casting call he now wishes he's slept through.
THE EXTRAS
Commentary: Nobody likes McG for some reason, I don't see the hate myself, dude's alright behind the lens, I personally dig the hell out of SUPERNATURAL, I mean he's not the best in the biz but he's certainly not the worst either. Even here, he's able to point out and admit some fo the film's shortcomings, which most directors wouldn't do I'm sure.

Bachelorette Party: Lauren goes to Vegas for her bachelorette party...this isn't BRIDESMAIDS or THE HANGOVER though, pretty tame stuff. Deleted Scenes: There's six in all with an optional commentary by McG. Nothing of note, I definitely see why they got the axe.

Alternate Opening/Endings: The opening wasn't all that different (same setup in Dubai) and then there's three different endings, all of which suck really. This flick was in development hell for a few years with all sorts of problems, maybe these were failed concept endings.

Gag Reel: Meh, I've seen better and I've seen worse.

Previews: We've got some trailers, some BD-LIVE content as well as a DVD and DIGITAL Copy of the film to go along with the Blu-ray.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Many of these types of comedies are funny for the first one or two acts, but fall apart in the last act due to fumbling with all the loose ends. This one didn't (much to my surprise) and though that's not nearly enough to make this an "epic" or "classic" moment in comedic history, it does give it enough points to stay above water as far as I'm concerned.
