WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Veteran spymaster George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is pulled back into the fray when it’s learned that one of the heads of “The Circus” is a Soviet Mole.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY was a film that ranked highly on my best of list in 2011. I absolutely adored this old-fashioned, seventies style spy thriller. John Le Carré is a difficult author to adapt, and for every CONSTANT GARDENER or THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, there’s a LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL, or RUSSIA HOUSE. Tomas Alfredson (LET THE RIGHT ONE IT) nails it through, with this comparing favorably to the iconic BBC miniseries starring Alec Guiness as Smiley.

In his stead, Gary Oldman is superb. One thing that struck me about his performance was how he was virtually unrecognizable, even though the use of make-up to disguise him is nil other than a pair of glasses. Oldman just carried himself in such a radically different way that he usually does, that at times it’s easy to forget who you’re watching. It’s no wonder he got an Oscar nomination, and had he won, I would have been very happy. His Smiley is a study of reserve, with him not even speaking until twenty minutes into the film. That said, underneath his icy exterior is a sad, repressed man with a cheating wife, and a job where he knows he’s expendable.

The rest of the cast is similarly good, with Colin Firth’s rakish “Tailor” being a bold departure from his part in THE KING’S SPEECH. Benedict Cumberbatch of SHERLOCK is wonderful as Oldman’s trusted aid, and his infiltration of The Circus, set to George Formby’s Mister Woo is my favorite setpiece. I also really enjoyed Mark Strong as the betrayed, disavowed agent- reduced to working as a supply teacher at a British boarding school.

THE EXTRAS
Some deleted scenes and commentary by Oldman and Alfredson, which is worth a listen.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Alfredson’s assembled a spy thriller for the ages, and home viewing is a great way to watch this, as due to its complexities, the occasional use of pause and rewind may not be a bad thing. I loved it, and I suspect most readers that come to this site will too.
