WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A futuristic take on Robert Louis Stevensonís ďTreasure IslandĒ, which finds young Jim Hawkins (voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) re-imagined as a rebellious teen, who ends up on a journey to the magical ďTreasure PlanetĒ with space-pirate John Silver (Brian Murray)- a cyborg, in tow.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Ah- TREASURE PLANET, the film that sank Disneyís animation department. By the time this film hit theaters, during the holiday season of 2002, Disneyís Animation department was already in trouble, having fallen quite a bit from the lofty heights it achieved in the mid-nineties. Like 2001ís ATLANTIS, this was an attempt to put Disney into Sci-Fi territory, and boasting a huge $170 million budget (donít forget this was ten years ago), and lots of CGI-enhanced effects- not to mention an IMAX release, it was hoped this would put Disney back on top.

Suffice to say, it didnít, with TREASURE PLANET crashing and burning at the holiday box office. Looking at it ten years later, itís easy to see why audiences didnít warm to it. For one thing, even ten years ago the trend toward full on Pixar-style CG animated films was in full swing. By sprinkling in some action, and giving this an ďedgyĒ PG rating (which it didnít deserve- this is G territory), it was thought this would be an animated equivalent to the Pixar cross-over hits, but it didnít happen. For one thing, itís far too reminiscent of another animated sci-fi flick, TITAN AE- which sank Foxís Animated Division in 2000. No matter how hard they tried, the target teenaged-boy demographic was not going to see a cartoon.

Transforming Treasure Island into sci-fi is also kind of a hare-brained idea. Why not just do a faithful animated version? Without the lasers and aliens that probably turned off the fans of classical Disney Animation that would have been attracted to a film like this, it might have worked. As it stands, the voice acting is fine- with Gordon-Levitt, years from stardom, making a good Jim Hawkins, even if they way they animated him, with a constant James Dean-pout, a ponytail, and an earring probably seemed lame and dated back in 2002. Brian Murray makes a great Long John Silver, and itís always fun hearing Emma Thompson and David Hyde Pierce show up, although Martin Short as the tacked-on comic relief stretched it a bit thin. The score by James Newton Hoard is excellent, although the songs by John Resnick of the Goo-Goo Dolls arenít the least bit memorable.

THE EXTRAS
Most of the extras here are ported over from the 2003 DVD, so Iím not sure why this is called the tenth anniversary edition. A look back and the film that all-but sank the animation department would have been interesting, but itís a no-go. Recycled features include an audio commentary by the director and animators. Thereís a quick introduction by Laurie Metcalf, who voices Jimís mom, and an extensive alternate opening and ending along with another deleted scene . Thereís also close to an hours worth of

production featurettes which will be interesting to animation buffs, a virtual tour of the R.L.S Legacy which is the spaceship where the action takes place. Thereís also a Disney-pedia featurette on pirates, which is broken up into tiny, bite-size segments for kiddies. All of the extras are in Standard Def. Thereís also a DVD of the film bundled with the set.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
After TREASURE PLANET, the Disney Animation studios were never the same, turning to lower-budget films like BROTHER BEAR, HOME ON THE RANGE (a huge flop)- but now Disney is mostly focused on 3D CG animation, which is where the bread and butter is these days.

Saw this movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I must say that I think it's pretty good. Kinda liked that disney made a steampunk (even though disneyfied steampunk) version of Treasure Island.
