WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A crew of American sailors (Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel) receives special orders to mount a covert takeover operation of a distressed German U-boat. They are to board the ship and recover the Enigma, a secret communications device. After completing the first part of their mission, their own submarine is completely destroyed. Forced to man the German ship, they must find a way to deliver the Enigma back to the Allies Forces.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I’ve got a real soft spot in my heart for a good old fashioned war story and this movie was just that. Filled with just the right amounts of suspense and action, I found myself drawn to many of the characters as they struggled to find a way out of a seemingly doomed situation. We learn that they were just everyday people, driven to find courage and determination for a greater cause. Straight from the start, the movie grabs you and maintains a stranglehold on your captivated attention. The special effects are spectacularly done but careful not to draw away from the most important aspect of the film, the unfolding human drama. I was astounded at how realistic many of the sequences were, especially the authenticity of the subs and warships. McConaughey really surprised me with a terrific, convincing performance as the crew’s leader. Harvey Keitel as the grizzled veteran, did an admirable job too. What I really liked about this movie was how the plot continually introduced swerves to keep you guessing. Just when you think they’re in the clear…POW! More troubles and problems. There’s a particular scene where the crew’s sub is trying to survive a German bombing which I guarantee, will leave you breathless. A great story, fine special effects and moments of wild action make for a very solid movie.
THE EXTRAS
They’ve manage to include plenty of worthwhile bonus stuff including a series of small featurettes : "The Making of U-571", "Creating and Constructing U-571", "Inside the Enigma", "Britain Captures the U-110", "A Submariner’s WWII Experience" and "Capturing the U-505". These are all wonderful additions which help provide great information of how much work and research went into making this movie. The 2 subs featured in the movie were actually created from scratch and were full working replicas! It seems as though the makers of the DVD tried to give more credit to the British (who inspired the movie’s story) by including a great interview with a former Naval officer who actually lived through the entire ordeal. A cool extra was the inclusion of real war time footage of real submarine battles. A trailer and production notes are also included. The DVD also has some very slick sub themed menus, complete with thundering sound and animation.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
A fine release which scores high marks in every department, especially in terms of audio performance. The extras were extremely well done and serve as terrific companions to an already solid movie. Deservedly so, this DVD is hereby rewarded with my revered "Ass Kicker Medal of Honor", for its outstanding service and dedication to home viewers. Definitely worth the money.
