WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The vampire warrioress Selene, escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Iíve been a fan of the Underworld movies for quite some time. I know that theyíre not necessarily good movies, but theyíve always been fun, with the exception of the third one. Iíve seen them all in theaters and just enjoyed the crap out of them and out of Kate Beckinsaleís kickass vampire character, Selene.

Going into this third installment (technically fourth, but third with Beckinsale), I didnít exactly have high expectations, but I expected to be entertained with the sheer ridiculousness of it all. And as far as entertaining goes, just what did the film have?

Kate Beckinsale in excessively tight leather? Check.
Lots of action to keep you on the edge of your seat? Check.
Just enough of a story to make you feel like you werenít quite wasting your time? WellÖ

Thatís where we lose things a bit. Since the last Underworld movie, shit has gone down and instead of the vampires fighting the lycans, they both are trying to survive against an assault from the humans. Selene is trying to find Michael and instead finds a young, hybrid girl that Selene immediately feels the need to protect (I'll give you one guess as to who the girl is).

Now again, I donít so much have a problem with the stories in the Underworld films since theyíve never particularly been strong points with the franchise. What I did have a problem with were the action sequences in the film. UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING has hopped onto the 3D bandwagon and as a result, much of the action is set up as gimmicky things-coming-out-of-the-screen type stuff. That's fine if you're into the whole 3D thing, but when you're watching the film in 2D, whether it's in a theater or at home, it just comes off badly. I just think this movie, and all others for that matter, could do with approximately 100% less 3D.
THE EXTRAS
Cracking the Underworld picture-in-picture experience: This is a pop-up video feature that includes flashbacks to the other films as well as trivia from the franchise. Also included are tidbits on the history behind the vampires and lycans, or at least the history thatís been created for the Underworld franchise.

Filmmakers' commentary: Your run of the mill commentary on the film and bits of information from the lips of the people who put the film together.

Selene Rises: A featurette all about Selene and how Kate Beckinsale portrays her in the Underworld movies. The cast and crew discuss her place in the films and what itís like to work with her and additionally talk about the changes made to Selene in this latest film in the franchise.

Casting the Future of Underworld: The directors talk about where the franchise stands and how the newer characters will factor into things down the road.

Resuming the Action: This is a featurette that goes over how the action sequences came together for the film. This also goes over a lot of the stunt work as well and gives us a pretty good look behind the scenes.

Building a Better Lycan: When you think about it, this feature is pretty self-explanatory in the sense that it pretty well revolves around the special effects team that built the suits used for the lycan costumes. Itís a pretty neat if youíre into special effects as the team gives you a lot of information about how they made the suit and what they wanted to achieve with the costumes.

Awakening a Franchise, Building a Brutal New World : I honestly thought that this would just be more about the film itself, but this featurette discusses the 3D technology behind the film and what some of the cast members really think about it.

Blooper Reel: I know these arenít meant to be silly and fun, but a lot of the bloopers I think are more inside jokes between cast members and crew members. When itís a comedy movie, these tend to be hilarious, but less so when itís a serious movie.

"Heavy Prey" music video by Lacey Sturm feat. Geno Lenardo: While I generally tend to enjoy the music in the Underworld films, I more enjoy it while itís playing in the film itself. Outside of the film, itís not really my cup of tea. However, if this kind of music is up your alley, itís the music video for the song mixed in with footage from the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Comparably to the other films in the franchise, UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING is definitely the weak link (to me). Keep in mind that Iím not including the Rhona Mitra Underworld film when I say that. However, that doesnít mean that UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING canít be enjoyed. It has moments when it was a lot of fun and reminded me of why I liked the franchise in the first place, but unfortunately fell short the majority of the time.

The special features are pretty neat and they didnít half-ass them like so many films do, so if you enjoyed the film, thereís that. I canít say that I would really recommend owning the film for any other reason than you want to complete your Underworld collection or you just happened to really enjoy the film, but itís a fun mindless watch that under other circumstances I wouldnít have had a problem with renting.

I too am a fan of the Underworld series, but this movie to me just made absolutely no sense & felt like it was trying to be in the real world. Which to me is what made the first 2 movies so much fun. Also I can't stand when films have to bring a kid into the mix to save just for the human factor. I will buy this once it hits the cheap bin at Wal-Mart, which should be by end of summer lol.

BLEAK

The first three movies were highly entertaining with an extremely talented cast. It helped Kate Beckinsale become the star she is today. This movie has pointless story and direction that goes drown the drain from the start. I was wondering why Patrick Tatopolous wasn't asked to be director considering the good job he did with the last movie. More importantly the realistic monster work is lost. Everything that would have failed the franchise is clearly in this one. Lets hope then next one

Also Selene looks like she's wearing a wig, maybe it was fine for The Incredible Hulk in the 70's but by todays standards it's very poor.
