WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
If you ask yourself the film’s title, this movie answers it. Gilbert Grape (the Johnny Depp!) is stuck in a small, boring town with a crappy family situation. It seems as if his life is going nowhere but down the crapper. It also greatly pains Gilbert that his brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio) is retarded and may need help for the rest of his life. One day, a pretty stranger comes to town, but will things change? So what’s really eating Gilbert?
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE is one of those “smaller” films that comes out of nowhere and smacks you in the face with how damn good it is. There is a good, realistic story here backed up by some truly Oscar worthy performances. Continuing my brief Johnny Depp stint, the guy just doesn’t cease to captivate me no matter what the role. He’s an everyman but slightly better looking. Depp plays Gilbert with a depressing languor that you really feel for his character. To top that, I could really identify with his situation. Of course, if you have ever seen or heard of this film, then you know the break out star is Leo! DiCaprio’s portrayal of the retarded Arnie is so believable and sincere that you intently watch the movie just to see what happens to him. Throw in a great supporting cast including John C. Reilly, Crispin Glover, and Juliette Lewis and you have a damned good film that happens to have a heartfelt story of family, and appreciation.

It is not easy being the man of the family with no future in sight, that’s why you watch Gilbert’s plight with such interest. Adding to the pot, are other storylines like being a store clerk, dangerous sex with housewife, family problems, love issues, and a whole lot more. In short, this is a great drama that shouldn’t be missed. It will keep you entertained and you might even learn something about yourself from it. If anything, see it for the Deppster and Leo!
THE EXTRAS
Commentary by director Lasse Hallström and write Peter Hedges >> These cool dudes sound more down home than Hollywood, which I dig. They talk about the film and growing up in small towns. Dugg.

The Characters of Gilbert Grape >> 11 min > The cast and director talk about the quirky and interesting characters in the film. Even the Deppster in full pirate gear reminisces about the film.

The Voice of Gilbert Grape >> 6 min > Peter Hedges kicks things off on how he started the story (which is fascinating) then Depp and Hallstrom add how things rolled along.

Why We Love Gilbert Grape >> 8 min > The cast and crew talk about their favorite scenes in the film and why they like it. Unlike a lot of other fluff, this is good. Though, I wish Leo would have showed up.

Lastly, you get a Theatrical Trailer, Photo Gallery, and Previews.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE is a great 90’s film that should be seen. It features a heartfelt story, realistic characters, and actors at their best. The film is only enhanced by a good DVD with some fun special features. No one can resist both Depp and Leo! Where’s the sequel THE GRAPES?
