WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In 2003, at the height of Operation Enduring Freedom, Kim Baker (Tina Fey), a desk reporter, volunteers to lace up her boots and become a field reporter in Afghanistan. A three-month assignment leads to years overseas, as the thrill of war reporting leads Kim to take exceedingly more risks.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Based on a true story, WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT is a captivating story that is surprisingly original, jarring, and (at times) hilarious. Initially, the film was titled THE TALIBAN SHUFFLE - a derivative of the memoir that the movie is based on. However, somewhere in the production process, it was changed to the NATO phonetic alphabet slang for "WTF". And WTF is the perfect name for the film, as the tone of the movie switches from the horrors of war to a kegger at the reporters' frat house-esque living quarters.

WTF, how can journalists party when people are dying around them, even some of their own? WTF, how can the quest for the most salacious news stories set journalists into a feeding frenzy that may endanger their lives? While WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT certainly gives the story a more humorous element, it also tackles ethical dilemmas of journalistic war-time coverage, and the issues of U.S. nation-building in Afghanistan. One recurring scene in particular highlights the Marines attempting to build a well, which keeps getting blown up. It is only after Baker talks to the women of the village that she understands the surprising reason for its destruction, and showcases that maybe what we think is best for a populace may have hidden consequences.

Although Tina Fey has had hit after hit of comedies on television, it seems her record isn't as absolute on the silver screen. Of course there are exceptions - MEAN GIRLS and BABY MAMA - but it isn't until WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT that a film perfectly highlights Fey's strength as a intelligent, hilarious leading lady, and has a good script to boot. Utilizing her smart-girl persona, Fey expertly brings the real-life story of Kim Barker to life. And it is these fish out of water stories about a female reporter maneuvering her way through a war-torn country that gives this film an emotional punch and material for Fey's versatile range.
THE EXTRAS
All In: The Making of WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT- Exactly what it sounds like; this is an almost 15 minute behind the scenes featurette, which also features interviews with the cast and crew. They discuss casting Tina Fey, the writing team and supporting cast, costume/set design (since the movie was filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico), the U.S. military involvement in the film, and a lot in between!

War Reporter: The Real Kim- Like any movie based on a true story, the first thing I wanted to do after watching this film was to research the real Kim. Described as the "real Liz Lemon", the featurette introduces Kim Barker, who wrote the book "The Taliban Shuffle", which the movie is based on. Kim briefly speaks about her time in Afghanistan. I just wish she also contributed a commentary track to the film!

Embedded In Reality- Kim also is interviewed for this featurette. Filmmakers describe the movie's balance between reality and fiction, and the actual experts (including military personnel) that gave advice during the filmmaking. The clip also describes many of the military assets used in the film.

Wedding Party- Using the film's wedding scene, the filmmakers demonstrate how they created as authentic an Afghan experience as they could in Mexico. It was really interesting to hear a brief description of the cultural elements of an Afghan wedding.

Laughing Matters-A look into the frat house style accommodations of the war journalists, where civilians unwind in an otherwise dangerous environment.

Deleted Scenes- There are four deleted scenes: Kim and Iain, Daymare, Prison, Kabul Zoo. I can certainly see why they didn't include the Kabul Zoo scene, where a lion is killed by a grenade... yeah...

Extended Scene- An extended look at the wedding scene.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
As I was watching the movie, I realized how much I take war-reporting for granted. Along with the heartbreaking documentary JIM: THE JAMES FOLEY STORY (which I suggest you watch first before cleansing your palate with something more akin to WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT), I have a newfound respect for the dangers they put themselves into and the problems that present themselves behind the curtain. WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT is an interesting film that potentially will give you a new perspective on something you see every day.

I really enjoyed this. I understand that it takes several liberties with Kim Barker's account (she worked in print media, for one), but Tina Fey is at her best trying to balance personal and professional problems, it gave Margot Robbie a chance to play a woman who isn't defined by the men who want her, and Christopher Abbott was unrecognizable to me.
