WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In a post-apocalyptic earth populated by elves, fairies and mutants- two wizard brothers, one evil, the other good, fight a battle that could lead to earth's renewal or ultimate doom.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
WIZARDS is 20th Century Fox's OTHER 1977 science-fiction entry. While not even a fraction as successful as STAR WARS, WIZARDS has maintained a decent cult following over the years. It's an interesting film- more fantasy that STAR WARS, and it's no surprise that on the strength of this, animation maven Ralph Bakshi (FRITZ THE CAT) moved on to the 1978 animated version of LORD OF THE RINGS.

Thirty-five years later, WIZARDS is more than a little cheesy- but it's fun, and charming in a retro way. There's something refreshing about how uncynical a film this is. It was probably pretty ambitious for '77, with this being a PG as opposed to G-rated effort. The fairies are a decidedly sexual bunch (well some of them are) and there's more death and destruction that you'd normally get in a film like this.

Visually, WIZARDS is very interesting. Sure, the animation is dated, but I've always liked traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation (mixed with a share of rotoscoping). It also needs to be said that WIZARDS is a good film to watch with a little weed, with the crazy colours and mystical storytelling being just the ticket if you want to watch this a little baked.

THE EXTRAS
In it's 35th anniversary edition, WIZARDS comes in a beautiful 24 page book packaging. The liner notes, which include a letter from Ralph Bakshi himself are very interesting. Next is a commentary track by Bakshi, and a documentary on Bakshi, dubbed The Wizard of Animation. He's a talented guy, with an interesting body of work, so this is a very interesting watch- although it's a port from the old DVD, so it's not in HD. Next is a still gallery and trailers & TV spots .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
While this is no HEAVY METAL, I enjoyed WIZARDS for it's retro-charm. Heck, I've always enjoyed whacked-out seventies sci-fi, and the extra appeal of it being animated makes this well-worth watching, especially if this type of thing happens to be your speed.

Had no idea this was out on blu-ray, that's awesome. This is my favorite of Bakshi's.

Thanks for the heads up about this! I love that era for animation. Gotta get all of Bakshi's stuff
