Xena: Warrior Princess (S3)
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In season three of "Xena: Warrior Princess" we rejoin the heroic adventures of Xena and her trusted companion Gabrielle as they battle the forces of evil, come up against some pretty scary beings and ultimately triumph with their strength and love for each other. The mystery of Gabrielle's unborn child is also revealed, while betrayal between the two heroines causes trouble in their relationship, and together Xena, Gabrielle and many others battle barbarians, overcome oppressors and defeat gods and demigods to protect the innocent and fight for peace in ancient Greece. Over 22 classic episodes.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
“The Furies” starts out this season and puts Xena’s paternity into question, is it Ares the God of War, or not? We also see Xena’s comedic side as she is driven crazy by the Furies and acts most unbecoming of her. She has great comedic timing, which we can appreciate in further episodes such as “Warrior…Priestess…Tramp” in which Lucy Lawless plays three different look-alike characters, and “Fins, Femmes & Gems”, in particular. Throughout this season, Xena and Gabrielle’s friendship is seriously tested due in part to the birth of Hope, the child of the evil Dahak by Gabrielle. Hope is responsible for the death of Xena’s son, Solan, which brings us to the middle of the season with “The Bitter Suite”, a musical journey which explores pain and healing after the death of Xena’s son and her betrayal by Gabrielle. Even though it was my least favorite show (due to not being a huge musical fan), it did showcase Lucy Lawless’s incredible singing voice, and the very missed Kevin Smith’s too.
More secrets of Xena’s past are also revealed in this season with the episodes entitled “The Debt” and its conclusion, “The Debt II” which introduce us to another very important part of Xena’s past, her mentor in the land of Chin: Lao Ma. It was cool to see Xena doing moves reminiscent of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON as well as to see her transformation in those two episodes. It is my best loved “two-parter” of the season, although the two part dramatic season finale “Sacrifice” and “Sacrifice II” were also amazing and thrilling. This brings to a tragic end the season with the death of Gabrielle or is it? A real cliff-hanger, if I ever saw one.
Interviews with the Actresses/Actors, Producers, Editors, Writers, and Set Designers: Donald Duncan, Robert Gillies, Lucy Lawless, Hudson Leick, Renee O'Connor, Ted Raimi; Oley Sassone, Steven L. Sears, R.J. Stewart, Alexandra Tydings: I found these to be very informative and even funny, at times. Very cool to see the actors talk about their roles and storylines, especially hearing Lucy Lawless’s amazing Kiwi accent.
Featurette: Retrospective on "Sacrifice" Parts 1 & 2 (30 minutes): A very interesting short feature, especially if these two episodes are your favorites.
Never before seen footage of deleted, alternate and recently discovered scenes: A view into previously unseen territory, a cool feature for the fan who wants to know and see it all.
Video & Audio Commentaries from Elizabeth Friedman, Lucy Lawless, Hudson Leick, Renee O'Connor, Ted Raimi, Steven L. Sears, R.J. Stewart, and Robert Tapert: The video and audio commentaries often overlap with the same information, but nevertheless they are both entertaining and quite informative as well. A behind the scenes look into the production of the show.
Blooper Reel: Funny as Hell!
Photo Gallery: A beautiful photo retrospective of the gang at Xena.
