WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Two lower class friends and roommates struggling to make ends meet come up with the perfect solution to mend their economic woes: Lets make a porno! (Duhhh)
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Kevin Smith and Seth Rogen like to make R rated comedies. They love dropping F bombs and making sex jokes (who doesnt?) and with a title like this one, you know youre gonna get a shit-ton of both. So if youre a concerned parent who doesnt want little Jenny and Jimmy learning a new meaning for the word teabag, keep the little kiddies far, far away from this baby. That said, you yourself may have a great time!

As far as plot goes, never has a title been more appropriatesort of. See, when going into a flick called Zack and Miri Make A Porno, you expect just that; a gang of hilarious actors spending a few hours of screen time mocking what is already a hilarious industry on his own. And for two thirds of the movie, that's exactly what you get. And its great. But Kevin Smith, now getting up there in years at the ripe old age of 38, has apparently become a bit of a softy. Hes always been fascinated with relationship stories, but with a plot this goofy, to me theres no real place for sentimentality. While we get plenty of the wacky, witty, raunchy scenes wed hope for, the film eventually becomes much less about porn and much more about the blooming relationship between Rogen and his smokin hot co-star Elizabeth Banks. By the films final scene, the filmmakers literally seem to forget that they just shot a porno. The making of the porn was a blast, and I for one would have liked to see the final result of all that, umm, 'hard work'.

Luckily, the cast and the rest of the script keep us laughing most of the way through. Seth Rogen is on his A game as usual, and its great to see Jason Mewes playing someone other than Jay. In the T & A department, we get two porn legends in Katie Morgan and Traci Lords to gawk at, and Craig Robinson as the films producer is great every time hes on screen. But the man who really steals the show, even though hes in only one scene, is Justin Long as a gay porn star. I could watch his bit on repeat for hours. Overall, this is neither Smith nor Rogens best work, but, theres still a little something for everyone here.

Ah, and a word of warning so none of you guys will be massively let down like myself...amazingly, we do NOT get a peek at Elizabeths Banks. If not now Liz, than WHEN?!
THE EXTRAS
DISC 1:

Deleted Scenes: Ladies and gentlemen, there are 43 deleted scenes here. I remember the DVD for Dogma had 100 minutes of extra footage, and this looks to be in that ballpark. My question is thishow long are Kevins scripts?! One scene worth browsing is a 20 min improv interview with Justin Long and Brandon Routh on the set of a gay porn shoot.

DISC 2:

"Popcorn Porn" - The Making of Zack and Miri (1:14:49): A very lengthy, in-depth behind the scenes. Not at all technical, its much more about how Zack and Miri was born and the issues and hijinx they faced throughout the making, including the long, tedious battle with the MPAA. If youre a fan of Kevin Smith and/or this movie, you may dig this.

Money Shots: A Series of Webisodes (47:46): 23 webisodes from the set. A bunch of cast and crew pop in on the various episodes, which function as little comedy skits and behind the scenes glimpses. A few are funny, most are not. Seems like they were done more for the casts amusement than anything.

Comic Con 2008 (23:10): As the title suggests, this is Kevin Smiths always popular Comic Con Q & A panel with much of the cast from the film. The man is truly great in front of an audience. Katie Morgan comes off surprisingly cute and funny (for a porn star), and some of the fanboys and girls in the crowd are a riot.

"Gang Bang": Outtakes, Ad-libs, and Bloopers (13:00): A whole lot more alternate takes and one-liners from the set. The talent of these guys is truly fun to watch, worth it for one ad lib by cast member Ricky Mabe alone (I think we'll soon see more from this guy).

Seth vs. Justin - The Battle For Improvisational Supremecy (7:25): Seth Rogen and Justin Long riff about gay porn in my favorite scene from the film, really funny stuff. If I had to pick a winner, Id give the crown to Justin.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Goofy and rude, with a great cast and a bit of T and A to boot, Zack and Miri is a sleazy comedy that really wants to have a heart. If that sounds like an odd combo, it is, and it doesn't always work. But it's still a lot of fun, and for those craving more laughs, there are literally hours of DVD special features to go around.
