WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
After years in seclusion, Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) return to the world of fashion to foil a plot to kill the world's most beautiful people.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
There's been a real trend this year where mediocre movies have been getting reviews that make them sound like the worst films ever. It happened with BATMAN V SUPERMAN, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, and notably with ZOOLANDER 2. While not quite as good as those other, unfairly maligned, titles, ZOOLANDER 2 isn't quite as bad as it's made out to be.

While, yes, it's at least a decade too late both in terms of star Ben Stiller's popularity and the timeframe to cash-in on a sequel, the film does have its moments. Well, a few anyways. While loaded to the gills with cameos - to its detriment - there are some gems, with Kiefer Sutherland ironically the funniest. Stiller's on autopilot here, not showing the imagination he did as a director on the first film, TROPIC THUNDER, or the more recent SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY.

If anything, this feels like a belated attempt to cash-in on the first, but it's silly and most of the jokes are recycled - from Blue Steel to Hansel's vanity. Even Will Ferrell seems bored as Mugatu, although Kristen Wiig is fascinatingly grotesque as a new villainess.

Much of the plot doesn't work, especially the bit about Zoolander's long-lost son, with the resolution being especially unfunny and desperate to milk a laugh. It feels throughout much of the film that Stiller's totally lost his edge as a comedian, with this being the safe kind of comedy he seemed to swear off around the time he did TROPIC THUNDER.

THE EXTRAS
The ZOOLANDER Legacy: About ten minutes long, this goes into the original movie's cult status, with several of the celebrities contributing cameos talking about how much they like it. It's bizarre to see Sting talk about having watched the film several times.

Go Big or Go Rome: A look at the new location, with the idea being that they already did New York and needed to find another, equivalent mecca.

Drake Slather: The Man Who Created Zoolander: A tribute to the late comedian, who helped create the character and died sometime following the first film.

Youth Milk: A ninety-second promo for Wiig's "Youth Milk" - caught in glimpses in the film.

There's also the now standard DVD/Digital copy.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
While mostly bad, ZOOLANDER 2 does have a few good moments, and while I barely eked out any laughs, it's never painful to watch - so that's something, I guess. Still, it's better than the unanimously ultra-negative reviews said it was.
