WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Zootopia is a bustling metropolis, filled with all different kinds of animal species, even predators and prey living together in harmony. But when a few of the city's predators start to go missing, rookie police officer Judy Hopps and her recalcitrant "partner" Nick Wilde are put on the case.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
ZOOTOPIA is Walt Disney Animation's latest inventive film that imagines what a world run by animals would look like. Similar to INSIDE OUT and WRECK-IT-RALPH, this world is so creative, you will still be discovering new things after each viewing. But the most interesting part of the film is its message, which focuses on inclusion, using animal species as metaphors for sexism, racism and overall bigotry. ZOOTOPIA's plot is thus extremely current and reflective of the issues faced in our society. These themes will certainly not be lost on audiences and will hopefully encourage interesting dialogue for those parents that want to address these issues with their children.

Judy Hopps has leaped her way into the pantheon of iconic Disney characters, and is one of my personal favorites. Brought to life by Ginnifer Goodwin, the ambitious rabbit is a great role model for kids and adults alike, showing what it is to work hard for a goal, and ignoring those that may try to tell you it is unachievable. The always-brilliant Jason Bateman also brings some welcomed levity to the screen, especially in the DMV scene with the sloths. I don't think I will ever be able to watch the movie and not laugh at that scene, or on the flip side... be in a DMV and not think of ZOOTOPIA.

ZOOTOPIA represents the best elements of an animated movie - memorable and entertaining characters, beautiful animation, and a story with important, real-life context. I was genuinely intrigued by the mystery element of the story, and shocked by one reveal in particular. Disney really hit it out of the park with this one and I expect it to be a major player come award season.
THE EXTRAS
Research: A True-Life Adventure- A look at how the filmmakers researched the animal kingdom, including animal behavior, to contribute to their work on ZOOTOPIA.

The Origin of an Animal Tale- This featurette explains how the movie came to be. What gave the filmmakers the idea and what made them decide to switch Judy to the forefront instead of Nick? Not to mention, the filmmakers pointed out that this marks the first film in quite some time that Disney has animals running around in clothes a la ROBIN HOOD.

Scoretopia- No surprise, this special feature describes how the score of the film was created, spotlighting five of cinema's greatest percussionists that worked on the music.

Z.P.D. Forensic Files- This is one of the coolest special features on any of the Disney Blu-rays I have! I wish it lasted longer. It explains a few of the hidden Easter eggs from previous Disney films that are featured in this movie, along with some hidden Mickeys.

Music Video- A music video for Shakira's song from the movie, "Try Everything."

Deleted Characters- We're used to movies having deleted scenes, but here we are introduced to a few characters that didn't make the final cut. Directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore explain why. My favorite was Honey the Doomsday Prepper, but there were so many good ideas here! I wish we could see them all in the film.

Zoology: The Roundtables- With introductions from the voice of Judy Hopps herself (Ginnifer Goodwin), there are three featurettes here exploring the character development process, environment, and animation.

Deleted Scenes- There is almost 30 minutes of footage here, seven scenes in all. There's even an alternate opening of the film. Some clips are further along in the animation process than others.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
ZOOTOPIA marks another can't-miss Disney hit. Since the Blu-ray is also filled with a cornucopia of special features, I would suggest running out and buying this as soon as possible!

Already done

It was maybe a little too old for my 4-year-old, but I suspect it'll be watched again and again. Another home run from Disney Animation.
