Boyle's next confirmed Nov. 5, 2009

Ralston's book's cover

Is Danny Boyle looking for a repeat Oscar-Sweep on his next project? If not him then at least Fox Searchlight would like that since all the elements are lining up for such a treat. And treat it usually is with Boyle, so who could blame the suits at Fox? Well, for that I mean - I could think of a thousand ways to hate Fox otherwise...

The studio and director have confirmed plans for their next film together called 127 HOURS, the long-rumored Boyle project about real-life mountaineer Aron Ralston who spent the titular amount of time trapped under a boulder. According to Variety the film will reunite the same creative forces and financial backing that made SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE deserve its title.

And with a CAST AWAY-type lead role of one guy trapped and presumably all alone on screen for most of the film, better leave a Best Actor nomination spot free for whoever will get that part. Recent rumors had Ryan Gossling high on Danny Boyle's wish list, but the official announcement only mentioned that the search is on for a lead.

Extra Tidbit: I'd see The Arrow play that: Fallon versus Big Friggin Rock. Cinematic Gold right there!

A guy trapped under a boulder? That's going to have a seriously impact on the number of chases he can be involved in.

This is a guy who had to drink his own urine to survive, and cut off his arm with a dull knife-like instrument, and then repel down the mountain afterwards...gives me the shivers

However...

If this movie had been shot with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role, he would overcome the boulder by pushing it off of his arm, lifting it over his head, and throwing it into a ravine, and laugh. Then he would leisurely hike out of the wilderness, and back to civilization.

IMO this will be a difficult film to achieve success. However with Boyle under the helm, I have a overwhelming sense of hope. I love how Boyle takes each film with a different approach with incredible visuals too. My personal fav being Sunshine.

And as for the actor, Daniel Day Lewis would be crazy perfect (think of There Will Be Blood's opening 15 minutes)

So Open Water but down a hole... maybe. I heard about this guy some time after it happened, just the thought of being in a situation where the only way out is to cut your own limb off makes me shiver.

Maybe there'll be a lot of back story - the boulder's motivations, Newton theorising gravity, stuff like that.
