So we got a little bit of info on the upcoming GEARS OF WAR movie this week. It wasn’t much, as it said the film is a prequel and is “more like CLOVERFIELD or something like that,” but it’s enough to inspire me to write this week’s Cast This column, as I think the film may start being cast soon.

I do firmly believe that GEARS OF WAR could be a great movie, if done correctly, but I’m unsure of director Len Wiseman’s (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, UNDERWORLD) ability to deliver. But directing aside, the movie can be made or broken by its cast, and no one is more important than squad leader and bandanaed badass MARCUS FENIX.

GEARS OF WAR creator Cliff Bleszinski had this to say when it was first announced that the GEARS movie was being made:

“Definitely not a wrestler. I think just go with a real actor…You know… like a Clive Owen type; somebody who can actually act and is incredibly charismatic. And they can put him on a workout plan for six months so he can build the muscle mass he needs.”

Yeah, because if there’s one thing Marcus Fenix has, it’s “charisma.” I think Bleszinski may be delusional with his pick, but I think there are a few actors that could play Fenix that didn’t necessarily get their start doing suplexes for a living. He needs to be a badass, yes, but he doesn’t have to be Stallone ripped, all that armor piled on him could make DJ Qualls look huge if need be. But who do you think would wield the chainsaw best?

Last Week: CAPTAIN AMERICA

I was blown away by the massive number of responses for last week’s column, almost doubling our previous record of comments. Almost 150 of you weighed in with your Cap’n suggestions, and honestly, I was a bit surprised by the results.

1. Jensen Ackles (10%) 2. Matt Damon (8%) 3. Chris Pine (6%)

The percentages are so low because there was such a diverse set of choices, and a lot of close runners up. I have to say that this is one week where I disagree with you guys. I think Ackles looks the part, but from what I’ve seen from him on “Smallville” and “Supernatural,” I don’t think he’s in any way ready to headline a film this big.

Your A-list choice was Matt Damon, and even though my preference is against A-listers all together, I would really have to go with DiCaprio or Pitt over Damon here. Chris Pine I could see working, but I think he’s a bit young, and you’d have to cut the blonde angle completely.

I don’t usually reveal my choices, but I was really pulling for Alexander Skarsgard and Jon Hamm this week. Both were runners up, suggested by many of you, but not enough to crack the top three. Ah well, you’re all entitled to your opinions, that’s why this column works.

OK, time to think about who would best fill the curb-stomping boots of Marcus Fenix!

Extra Tidbit: I wrote an article a while back casting a GEARS movie. I had no idea at the time that the actor who plays Terry Tate actually voices Augustus Cole.

I think you need someone a bit older. Not any of these new actors, who are good don't get me wrong but I think either Michael Biehn or Lance Henriksen. The armour would help to bulk them up.

Holt McCallany
Holt McCallany could really fit the role too. If you don't remember him, he was "the mechanic" in FIGHT CLUB and he also played "Captain Van Meter" in THREE KINGS. This guy is a REAL actor, he's versatile and in a TON of stuff, look him up on IMDB. He looks and sounds the part, as well.

I know people like this dude. He just needs to show his shit because not a lot of people know who he is. Johnny Messner would own this role. His looks, his voice, and he can act if you've noticed. He just needs a chance with some good material.

Dominic Purcell could be awesome for this part he kinda has the look and he's already got good size and the required acting chops.

Seriously, I think he's a great pick. Not only does he kinda look like Marcus but he can play the character without breaking a sweat, plus have him pump up (that suit will make him look big too)and you're good to go.

I'll probly get shit for Dominic West but they can make him look bigger then he is in a movie.. it's all padding on his equipment. The guy's a great actor and would be pretty cheap for such a high cost CGI movie.

I also like Timothy Olyphant as Baird (I like Renner but Olyphant could play a better jerkoff).

Definitely Nick Chinlund.

I have to say I'm really disappointed with the results for the Captain America Cast This. Matt Damon is too big of a name, Chris Pine is going to be busy with Star Trek, and Jensen Ackles is the absolute worst pick I can think of. My vote is still for Patrick Wilson.

I've played it before and out of all actors, I agree on Mickey Rourke. The guys has the right size, look and and acting ability for it. not that demanding a role so it's easy for him.

Now, firstly to way in with my Jensen Ackles opinion. I'm a huge Supernatural fan and Ackles is the best thing in it. There's also great potential for Jesse Custer in there, namely Mischa Collins (Castiel) but we won't go there yet. I think Ackles looks the part, no question and I also think he is up to the task. He's a talented guy with great comic timing so if this doesn't happen his time sho...

I think Purcell looks ideal in terms of look and build for this. He's not that great an actor but I don't think we need an Oscar winning performance. Just someone who looks badass and can take care a bid'ness and shit. My vote: Dominic Purcell.

...but a note on the Tidbit: Augustus Cole was also the name of a character in the second season of the X-Files. He was played by Tony Todd (the Candyman), and was also a special unit soldier.

AKA "Brad Bellick" from Prison Break. His face looks just like Marcus', aside from Fenix's scarring. Williams is bald and not exactly built, but Marcus wears a bandana over his head and bulky gear over his body the entire time. Seriously; Wade Williams.

Paul and I agree on many levels with the Captain America casting. I'm not sure who I would cast for Gears of War I own both games and never felt Marcus had any depth. Not the popular choice but maybe Sam Worthington?

Batista from WWE hes big just like him. But i agree with the Nick Chinland he does look a lot like him. If we could just take the actors from Predator and plop them in Gears it would be perfect.

I really have no clue. I agree with Staying Frosty, these guys are outrageously big. But honestly I'm 100% on board for a "smaller" guy playing these characters as long as they're at least 300 Spartan ripped.

But damn, I really dont know, i think Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson would be too cheesy. And Gerard Butler doesn't seem to fit either.

But I think a beefed up ...

I say Vin Diesel. The man desperately needs a new franchise. F&F is garbage and I have a feeling we will never see another Riddick movie. He looks the part, he's jacked, and he's actually a decent actor.

The thing is.... these characters are BIGGER then life... I mean, these guys are incredibly jacked.... so, possibly a Avatar type CGI Character... actors head, on a CGI body. But if that's the case, then just have Bender voice Marcus, since his voice is as almost important as his body.

Gerard Butler would be MONEY in this role. He has the voice and the demeanor. Marcus can be sort of a one-note, gruff bad ass because his sidekicks Dom, Baird, and Cole provide the heart, comic relief, and exuberance. If done right this could be a really awesome movie. The budget would have to be HUGE though because post-apocolyptic Sera is a fucked up place.

Dominic Purcell would be good also...I just think Butler is more dynamic. Marcus is the main character...I have a hard time seeing them cast Purcell unless there is a star somewhere in the cast with a really big role
