... end Lost with a movie!
by Sturdy
I have to admit that when I saw the first preview for Lost on TV, I thought for sure it was going to be a dramatic interpretation of Gilligan’s Island. I didn’t think there was any way they could keep the story remotely interesting for more than a season or two. There’s only so many coconut radios that an audience can stomach. But it didn’t take long for me to reverse my stance and hail Lost as one of the greatest shows on television, maybe even of all time.

I didn’t have high hopes in the beginning
I hesitate to rank it with the all-time greats, mainly because I need to see how it ends. If the last scene is Jack waking up in his bedroom and saying something like “whew, that was a vivid dream” then I’m going to start throwing crap balls at the TV. But really, how in the world could they possibly end the show and have it live up to what we’ve seen so far? Basically, I don’t think they’ll be able to do it on television. An event like the conclusion of Lost needs to be left to the big screen, which is why we need to end Lost with a feature-length film.

But I started to warm up to it…
J.J. Abrams has promised us that he is going to end the series and tie up all the loose ends and answer all the questions. So with that in mind, I’m assuming/hoping the “ending” will be just that; the end. As much as I don’t want a lame ending, I don’t want a cliff hanger. That’s another reason it would work better as a movie. Another thing I don’t want is for them to leave the series finale open and then revisit it in a few years and make a couple of movies. That would be extremely frustrating.

He better not screw us with a cliffhanger ending!
This is an easy, slam-dunk win for the series creators. They’ll still get big-time ratings with the last televised show, so they shouldn’t lose ratings. Then they’ll make bank with a big time movie. The base audience is already there and if you’ve seen one episode of the show, you’re probably going to go see the film. With the critical acclaim and huge fan base, this could turn out to be a huge summer film. It might even be worthy of a midnight opening.

What’s not to like?
No show in history has ended it’s run with a movie. Most shows drag on past their prime and lose the audience needed for a film, other shows just don’t have a story big enough for the big screen. Lost is one of those few shows in history that people are just dying to know how it ends. Not only that, but we’ve been wondering that since the first episode. The story is great, the actors are great, the writing is fantastic and the fans are loyal. What more do you need for a hit movie?

BAD IDEA
Sturdy - come on yourself. This show works as a serial, and swapping media would break continuity. The producers fought for an end date so it could do something unprecedented - be written with a beginning, a middle, and an end. All contained within the show's complete run. There simply is no need for a movie. If you are going to start making pronouncements from upon high about Lost, then you better bring your A game. |

I've been for this for awhile now. When I first heard about it I knew it was a perfect way to end it...so okay, it may not be great for non lost fans but I think there are enough lost fans(and those for curosities sake) that would go and see it. |

What the heck? Did Sturdy sleep with your boyfriend or something? I've seen you post the same complaint before to him personally. Get over it man. If you don't like his column, send him an email, I'm sure he'd love to hear from you.

SERVO,
I know what you're sayin', but what do ya mean, "c'mon"? Ya can't go to the theater anymore without getting a talker at every single showing; I think the theater employs people to distract you so that you'll maybe buy another ticket to see what you missed the first time. I know I may just be too uptight about it, but man, the theater has just gotten to be awful lately; it's either disappointing presentation or disappointing people in attendance. lol.
But besides, I still think the show is as good as a movie NOW, and making it into a movie just seems really... well, mostly just pointless.
AND, the only people going to see it (at least, the only people who would need to bother) would be fans, the fans who through loyalty have made the series the money-making hit that it is, and I think that to charge us for the finale would be a bit of a slap in the face. Dragging us out for five years, and then saying "if you'd like to know the answer to this five year mystery, please have your credit card ready." Whether we'd be willing to pay or not, that's just uncool. |

BINGO BANGO
First off, does Abrams even have anything to do with this show anymore? As far as I can tell, it's now in the sole care of Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.
Secondly, it's my estimation that having negotiated shorter seasons, without trimming the budget, means that there's HUGE cash to throw into movie-quality effects and production. I wouldn't be surprised if over the next (and final) two seasons we see an escalation in scale. Thirdly...hmm...they did start showing promo's for the current season in theatre's. Maybe it's already being considered... |

I'm with jolanar on this one. Unless you're already a fan of the show, it would be useless for those who've never seen it.
By the way, how kickass is this season finale gonna be? |

Sturdy, I used to love this column, but now I can't remember when the last time was you did a "C'mon Hollywood" that I remotely cared about or found one bit relevant. Have you run out of ideas for this column? |

Firefly ended with a movie (Serenity), and I've never seen an episode of Sex and the City, but that has a movie coming out too.
But maybe we're talkin' a show that ends with a movie that was planned while the show was still in production? |
