... keep on keepin' on QT!
by Sturdy
I never thought the day would come when I’d feel the need to defend Quentin Tarantino. I really thought that he had enough great films to ascend to the level of being above chic insults and the random slams from critics and fans. But somewhere along the line Quentin must have said or done something wrong and now it’s “cool” to take digs and cheap shots at one of the most influential directors of the past 20 years.
The only negative thing I can say about Quentin is that he frustrates me because he talks about making more films than he actually makes. But the only reason that’s true is because he loves talking about movies and just can’t help himself. Isn’t that actually a good thing? So what if we’ve had to hear about a possible Vega brothers movie for the past 10 years. It’s probably something he’s thinking about and he doesn’t mind talking about it. Most writer-directors refuse to talk about any project they’re even thinking about, so we should be happy that Quentin is so open with what he’s working on.

I didn’t think he’d be able to top this…
As much as I love Tarantino, I don’t really have a problem with him making a movie every three or four years. If that means he can maintain the level of quality he has with Dogs, Fiction and Bill, then I’m all for it. Assuming of course that means the alternative is we get a movie every year and they’re half as good. It’s exceptionally hard to write and direct good films at a consistently high level (just ask Shyamalan) so if he needs time between films to work on the next, I say he should take as much time as he needs. It’s fine to beg the guy for more movies, after all, that’s what being a fan is all about. Just don’t slam him for taking his time.

until I saw this.
Maybe the recent wave of Tarantino bashing is a result of GRINDHOUSE. As much as fans complained about the films being split up, the first thing we do is compare the two films. Everyone realizes that GRINDHOUSE wasn’t a competition between Tarantino and Rodriguez…right? They’re two friends that wanted to make a couple of cool movies. And I don’t even know what to say to those that didn’t like DEATH PROOF. What’s not to like about a cool car chase with a hot girl strapped to the hood of a car going 60 mph? That’s just fun for the whole family.

Loved this one too
So he finally announced pre-production on INGLORIOUS BASTARDS and reporters and fans start slamming him for “remaking” a movie. Seriously? Why would anyone be upset Quentin f’n Tarantino is remaking a shitty 70’s b-movie that you hadn’t even heard of before he announced he was remaking it? Remake or not, Quentin Tarantino writing and directing a WWII movie sounds great to me. And don’t even call him a hack. He always gives credit where credit is due and that’s more than you can say for 98% of the directors in Hollywood today.

Critics be damned, this was a good time!
I realize that the normal nature of fanboys and critics is to be critical to the point of negative, but I’m not sure when it became chic to insult Quentin. Group think is prevalent amongst fans and critics alike and I find it disturbing that all of a sudden, group think dictates that we shouldn’t like him. It seems that every time he finds his way into the news, someone has to throw a dig in and slam him for something and frankly, I’m sick of it. If I get accused of slurping up QT, then so be it. There are worst people to slurp up than Mr. Tarantino. So QT; take your time and continue to make awesome movies!

Can I get a 'F*CK YEAH!'?
Quentin is a legend. Loved his each and every flick to the bone. Such a damn waste when this so-called 'bitching trend' starts, and it's ok to bash the man whose movies place you in an unforgettable rollercoaster ride, time after time after time. F*ck 'em. His flicks are the top of my DVD collection, and he's inspired me to make films myself.
F*ck the slammers. |

Amen brother. I had never heard of Inglorious Bastards until QT said he was making it. I had never heard it was a "remake" until I heard it was in preproduction.
I own all his movies, except for Jackie Brown and Death Proof (waiting for the actual GRINDHOUSE DVD). QT is a great, influential director and deserves any and all respect from fanboys. |

RUMSFIELD SAID IT BEST.
I pretty much agree with every point Mark_R made there. I got SOME enjoyment out of Kill Bill and Death Proof, but after his 90s flicks they were a bit of a letdown.
Dogs is still my favourite QT flick. I watched it again the other night for the first time in about a year. My roommate had never seen it before so it was fun to watch it with somebody who had no idea what to expect. I kind of envy him, coz I'd like to be able to watch it again for the first time and be blown away all over again.
Jackie Brown is my second fave, with Pulp coming in at a close third. Not that I don't love Pulp Fiction or anything, I just think that it's a little overrated, and people often overlook the merits of RD and JB because of it.
Naturally, I'll be at the cinema on opening day for Bastards. |

QT isn't the greatest film maker of all time, but I like him b/c his movies entertain me, plain and simple. There are a lot of movies out there that try to do the QT "feel" for a movie, but just lacks his signature style and comes off as disappointing.
BTW: Am I the only one still waiting for Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair?
C'mon, get on that QT. |

MY EVALUATION OF MR. QUENTIN JEROME TARANTINO
Res Dogs was very good. Pulp Fiction was his best movie in my opinion 5/5. Liked Jackie Brown, I know a lot of people don't.
Kill Bill was where Tarantino moved from actual filmmaker to hack. I don't like that word, since I did enjoy both Kill Bill 1 and 2, but there is no denying it was a tremendous step down for such a promising filmmaker. It's just cheesy indulgence and not the same man who made those other movies.
Now, Death Proof, there is no excuse for the poor quality of this movie. I HATED QT's script and the directing. My rating for this movie is a 1/5. The actors tried their best, so I won't fault them.
I would say the only thing about this movie that I actually liked was Mary Elizabeth Winstead (for looks and acting). But, QT has to go and take the one good thing about the movie and have her friends betray her and leave her with that dude to potentially get raped and it's all played for a laugh. For me, that scene was the absolute low point of Tarantino's career and it was impossible to care about the movie after that. Stuntman Mike wasn't a likeable character and neither were the girls he was trying to kill (after the shit they pulled with Winstead), so I had no emotional connection to any of it.
I'll keep an open mind for Inglorious Bastards, since I'm not the type of person who likes to hate on a filmmaker. Oh, I'll hate particular movies, but only after I see them, isn't that the fair thing to do? Hopefully, Inglorious Bastards will be good though. |

Tarantino is my boy. Has been since RD, always will be. He's meticulous and never fails to inspire people to conversation, whether they love him or hate him. That's the sign of true genius. |

OVERRATED DIRECTOR...
Tarantino has become overrated by fanboys (similar to the way Lucas and Speilberg are overrated).
With all that said, everyone has their likes and dislikes...
He may have had something when Pulp Fiction came out, but what has he done that has been so noteworthy?
*His black characters will be stereotypes calling each other "nigga." (Or scenes where epithets are being said against blacks, or "people of color").
*He'll have music taken from classic films.
*He'll have long, drawn out dialogue scenes.
*His movies will be based on some 70s film genre.
Real directors can expand, or give the audiences something different. I can even understand why M. Night Shyalaman has kind of lost it. (And even Shyalaman is a bit overrated).
*Sergio Leone was able to keep the Western aspect, but each film brings something new.
The same can be said of Clint Eastwood, and a host of other directors who are able to "bring something new to the table" in regards to filmmaking....and still retain some familiar aspect that they're known forl (Even Spielberg can be GOOD when he has a strong script, even though he has the tendency to overdo it with the sugary, touchy-feely moments that overshadow some of his stories.).

THANK YOU!!!
Well put Sturdy!
Still can't believe you left out "Jackie Brown," which, while not as relevant as "Pulp Fiction," is my favorite of the bunch. But I digress.
I did enjoy "Death Trap" quite a bit, but I understand why people think "Planet Terror" is better. I actually think one could argue that Tarantino, while a big fan of '70s trash cinema, is infinitely more gifted than the filmmakers of that era, at least with dialogue. And since his "Grindhouse" outing included a whole lot of talking before any action or thrills took place, people might've gotten a wee bit bored. Having said that, he displayed his usual flair for dialogue and I have no problem with that.
I am at times irritated by his train-of-thought speech, less so for what he actually says than what every now and then I think is just his ego. But he still seems like a really nice guy. And definitely a movie geek to be reckoned with. |
