... what the hell is going on with Robin Hood?
by Sturdy

I typically don’t question Ridley Scott. He has a unique, almost obsessed way of making films and since I enjoy 90% of everything he touches, I usually give the guy the benefit of the doubt and go see anything he directs. But there seems to be a lot of crap going on with this ROBIN HOOD film and I don’t have a good feeling about it. We probably won’t know until we watch the special features on the Blu-ray, but I really want to know why he’s so intent on making this film. And if the recent rumors that he and Crowe are fighting on set, or should I say, “not talking to each other”, then this film could be an embarrassment for everyone involved.

This is just something we don’t need. ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES came out in 1991 and was a decent, linear telling of the legend of Robin Hood. Yeah, I know Costner can’t hold a British accent and I still have no idea what Christian Slater was doing there, but the movie was fun, at least when I was 14. The point is that we don’t need another linear telling of the story of Robin Hood. If you’re going to bring Robin Hood back to the big screen, then do something cool with him and something we haven’t seen before.

Is Crowe too old to play Robin Hood?

So does this film even have a chance to succeed at this point? Every red flag a movie can have, this one has thrown out there. For starters, it doesn’t even sound like they could agree on a concept for the film. We started with the idea of telling the story from the view of the Sherriff of Nottingham, and even though I wasn’t a huge fan of that idea, at least it was a new take on an old story. Then there was the idea of Crowe playing both Robin Hood and the Sherriff, which, again, was a bad idea, but at least it was something different. So now it looks like they started filming with the goal of telling a linear Robin Hood story, which a) is a lame idea and b) is unoriginal.

Costner wasn’t that bad.

So after three (probably more) incarnations of an idea, they start pre-production and have to recast Maid Merrian when Sienna Miller dropped out. Miller seems like an actress that is trying hard to break into that elite status, so it’s surprising she would allow anything (even a “scheduling” conflict) to prevent her from starring in a Scott/Crowe film, but that’s a different topic. At least they got Cate Blanchett to step in. But they also started without even casting what is presumably the second lead actor role in the Sherriff of Nottingham. The role supposedly went to Matthew Macfadyen (who?).

At least Elwes held his accent.

I’m not saying this Robin Hood film can’t be good, I’m just saying it seems like a giant clusterf*** at this point. Yeah, I know Ridley Scott is a great director and this kind of stuff happens all the time on his films, but I don’t remember reading about this much drama on any of his other films. I’ll probably see it no matter what, but in order for Ridley to wow me, he’s going to have to do something I haven’t seen before, not just do something better than I’ve seen before.

Probably the biggest thing I can think of to stand against this, is Crowe is already older than Sean Connery when he played an old Robin Hood. Each version so far has pretty much done SOMETHING new, adding magical elements, a Moorish companion, bring back Robin Hood twenty years later. Make him a fox.

Just another in the corner for the original concept. Crowe as the Sheriff, the sheriff as the good guy would have been bad ass. Crowe as Robin Hood just looks stupid.

I loved the idea of twisting the story to the Sheriff of Nottingham as the hero and Robin Hood being shown in a negative light. When it was first announced I was like "Yes, somebody's doing something different!" and they just went and threw that out!

I still love Prince of Thieves. I agree that nothing really makes this movie stand out, and seems a bit unnecessary, but given the talent involved I'm sure it'll be good. I think if they strayed to far away from an original telling of the Robin Hood character (like making him the bad guy, as was once suggested), we'd still have a decent amount of complaints (i.e. Sherlock Holmes).

I still think that Michael 'Robin of Sherwood' Praed was, BY FAR, the best Robin Hood. With his almost ethereal airs, he often seemed like some woodland spirit come to life, and was an interesting contrast to his gritty band of 'Merry Men'.

Actually, everything about Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was good, except for Costner. Scott and Crowe could pull something out, but yeah, Errol Flynn *was* Robin Hood the same way Alan Rickman *was* the Sheriff of Nottingham.

BTW, Matthew Macfadyen played John Birt in Frost/Nixon. Good actor, but no Alan Rickman.

This is one of the worst Come on Hollywood articles ever. This movie is in my top 5 for anticipated films and Russell Crowe is going to rock as Robin Hood.

He totally looks like Maximus from Gladiator in that photo, which is just fantastic. Sooooooo shutup.

i really liked this c'mon hollywood. i've been wondering the exact same stuff for a while now and i actually thought the story through the eyes of the sheriff would be awesome! unfortunately since this is shaping up to be another linear telling of the tale and i really think Scott is the most overrated director working today i'll probably wait for the rental on this business.

Accoding to all sources, because of the delays in preproduction, and because Miller was already set t make other movies, she dropped out. What makes you think she got fired?

Why no pic of Errol Flynn?

Would have been his 100th Birthday this month. Shame he only made it halfway. Then again, he did shag, drink, and roister his way to the grave so I guess he had no complaints...

Burn down houses with the credits!!!
Since this is a Robin Hood film, they have to follow suite and launch burning arrows onto peoples houses to reveal credits.

If that doesn't make it then I wont go home happy.

I have a bad feeling about this too. I think he is too old for Robin Hood BUT maybe they are going the way of the old Connery film "Robin & Marian" with an older version??

And of course british Elwes held the accent...it's AMERICAN accents he can't hold for shit.

“not talking to each other”,
What about Lean and Guiness

Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski.

They didn't get along but made fantastic films.
Just because they don't get along, dosen't mean they can't make great films.
I say judge the film when it comes out. But don't judge it because of a cat fight

I Believe in Ridley Scott
However, the movie better at least be R-rated like "Kingdom of Heaven" and "Gladiator." And I agree, they better do something different with it, at least make Robin Hood a bit realistic.

As long as we don't get a Bryan Adams love song then I'm hip for this. Didn't Crowe and Scott also argued on the set of Gladiator? And look how amazing this turned out to be...
