... don’t screw it up Van Damme!
by Sturdy

For those of us that lived our pre-teen years in the early 90’s, Jean-Claude Van Damme was a staple on our TV sets and in the theaters. Karate dojo’s across America were filled with kids hoping to someday be able to do the splits while throwing knives at unsuspecting terrorists. But after several bad movies and a nasty coke habit, Van Damme was relegated to doing B-movies, where he’s faded from our hearts and minds as merely a punch line of 90’s clichés. However, he still has his fan base and all we needed was for him to find that special role that would remind people just how cool he still is. So it was with much glee that we got JCVD, which is a once in a lifetime comeback role if there ever was one.

But now the question is; you got it, what are you going to do with it? JCVD shed a light on Van Damme that most of us had never seen before and even though he was playing himself, it gave us hope that he actually does have some acting ability. But finding that role is worthless if he goes right back to doing straight to DVD B-movies. I realize those films have an audience and they eventually make money for everyone involved, but Van Damme can do better than that. There was a time and a place where he had to do them, and I accept that. But with the very impressive JCVD, I think he’s proved he can still carry a film if all the other ingredients are in place.

Time Cop: still my favorite, classic Van Damme movie

There’s a point in JCVD where he asks his agent to get him a mainstream movie, even at less money. I couldn’t have said it better myself. This is exactly what he needs. Why on earth he didn’t take a role in the EXPENDABLES is baffling. Stallone is out to resurrect the careers of every action hero out there and no one needs it more than Van Damme. I can’t believe that there’s not a studio out there that wouldn’t take a chance on Van Damme in a smaller role. The guy’s still in shape and can still kick some ass. He doesn’t have to be the hero, cast him as a sidekick or a supporting character and I guarantee he’ll make your film better.

He got his second chance, now what?

We can spend all day talking about who needs more roles and who should make a comeback, but it’s never clear what an actor should do once they actually get that comeback role. Such is the case with Van Damme. Not many former stars ever get a second chance, so Van Damme better take full advantage of his opportunity. As for what to do next, here’s a hint; if it’s produced by a company you’ve never heard of, directed by someone you’ve never heard of, costars people you don’t know and is shooting in the Middle East, don’t take the role!

You know what I would love to see from JCVD? More JCVD in Hard Target, Bloodsport or Sudden Death-like action movies!! Hell, if he's going to be in another Street Fighter movie, I'm there.

According to JCVD, he didn't take the role in Predator because he was afraid of getting injured after signing a movie deal with Canon films, and Bloodsport was to be filming soon. He was just starting to get his acting career off the ground and he was willing to take any roles.

Anyway, I love JCVD and agree that he needs to be a good action movie, but preferably not be the top star in that movie.

All valid points and maybe we will see him in the role of a baddie, but if you ask me until he eats his ego a bit it'll be more of the same. Then again we could be surprised, but given the current hell of Hollywood I doubt it. One can dream though. If you had the chance to cast a similar movie of the Expendables both consisting of 2 teams (1 good, 1 bad) who would your picks be on each side??? And Why??? For example, Vin Diesel, Jet Li, and Snipes vs. Bruce, The Rock, and Statham....just for giggles. Oh how bout' living stars vs. dead (Bruce Lee, Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, etc.)

I DON'T THINK SO! He has an ego problem from what i can tell. Van Damme doesn't do supporting role, period. Check this out in Uni*Sol was it Dolph Lundgren & Van Damme or the other way round? Unless if he's playing a bad guy (No retreat No Surrender) or himself (Double Impact, The Replicant) supporting roles are OUT.

That's it! let him play a bad guy and MAYBE we could love him again.

Besides this dude had an opportunity to be the PREDATOR! But oh no, I wont be credited? Sorry no, can-do! What a douche.

Maybe he was told his character dies early in The Expendables and flipped out. I guess we'll never know.

If you look on the wikipedia site for Expendables you'll see there's an unidentified cast member playing a role of the villian. Although, I'm pretty convinced it's Bruce Willis I keep holding out for JCVD

JCVD (the man) ain't no Sly or Travolta, both actors who have serious artistic cred behind them, and who dropped off the radar because of Hollywood Trends, not lack of talent. JCVD and Segal were C-Grade versions of Sly and Stallone, they don't have that extra spark you need. That ship has sailed.

I predict he'll continue to do whatever he can to make a living but he wants to do better and he will do films everybody will want to see, I see a new Van Damme movie in theaters, a worldwide release by 2013.

I would love to see a Van Damme comeback. Unfortunately I don't see it happening. Van Damme has always been a little off kilter - I remember back in his heyday I would always try and catch him if he was on the Tonight Show or Letterman or something and he was always totally weird and didn't seem to pay attention to the questions and just was OFF. I'm sure he could've been a much bigger star back then if he had picked better scripts. Now Sly comes to him with the PERFECT opportunity to resurrect his career in The Expendables...and he turns it down? Are you kidding me? The fact that he turned that movie down tells me he still doesn't get "it" and he is going to continue to make bad choices. It's really too bad because the Muscles from Brussels can light up the screen.

Glad you've put this out there, I've been saying the same thing for months. I hope someone in his entourage directs his attention to your article.

I've always thought he would make a great supporting turn in a mainstream movie as a villain - I can even see him playing in a medieval action picture. For example, Van Damme wouldn't have looked out of place on horseback as a villainous French knight in the new Robin Hood movie. C'mon Hollywood, think outside the box!

And Van Damme -- why the hell did you turn down The Expendables?
