Darabont Breaks Law Oct. 13, 2008

Frank Darabont will always have a special place close to my heart, where it's warm and sunny and rainbows happen. He directed THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION which is one of my (and many of yours I assume) favorite films of all time. So any Darabont news is big news in my books, even though he hasn't directed anything that I've liked since (I couldn't see THE MIST because I hate insects).

For reasons unknown, Mr. Darabont has abandoned his latest directorial effort LAW ABIDING CITIZEN. The film stars Jamie Foxx as a regular citizen who exacts revenge on the criminals who killed his wife and child, and the legal system that let them get away. Gerard Butler plays a an assistant D.A. caught in the middle. It's not yet certain how Darabont's departure will affect the film, but let's hope it still gets made because there's nothing like a vigilante film done right.

Extra Tidbit: I miss Andy Dufresne.

Frank Darabont is one of the few directors in Hollywood who really seems to value the stories he is trying to tell. I read somewhere (maybe at AICN?) that he didn't like some changes which were being made to the story, and so he left. If this is true, then good on him. It's refreshing to see a film maker who doesn't churn out crap just to get a paycheck (we know this especially because of the budget he COULD have had for The Mist, if he'd changed the ending).

Also, Green Mile FTW, how could anyone not like that movie?
