Just
last week, some people were actually saying that THE DARK KNIGHT was
overhyped or that it wouldn't live up to expectations, but what a
difference one week makes. As of this writing, only 6 days after its
initial release, KNIGHT has already made over $222M in North
American alone, beating BATMAN BEGINS' entire domestic run
from 2005 ($205M). The film will most likely become the
highest-grossing movie of the year any day now, and continues to
break records this week, becoming the
film to reach the $200M the fastest of all-time (it took only 5
days to reach that mark...the previous record-holder was PIRATES OF
THE CARIBBEAN 3, which hit that mark in 8 days).
Pundits
(that's schmucks like us) are predicting that by the end of next
weekend, THE DARK KNIGHT will have grossed over $300M in its
first 10 days of release, which again, would break the previous
record of 16 days, held by that PIRATES flick. More impressive is
that it took INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THOSE CRAZY MONKEYS 39
full days before it reached the $300M plateau, and IRON MAN...48
days. All that to say...this film is a-smoking!!!
So
let's start predicting whether or not you believe that it
will beat the highest grossing movie of all-time, TITANIC,
which has held the record since 1997 with a touch over $600M. I
personally don't think that THE DARK KNIGHT would be able to
maintain this same rhythm all the way toward that record, but then
again, you never know. It's to note that TITANIC actually started
somewhat "slowly" back in its opening weekend, with only
$28M in its first three days of release (compared to $158M for TDK).
In fact, it took TITANIC 25 full days to reach the $200M -- and
remember, it took THE DARK KNIGHT only 6 days to reach that!
The
main difference between the 2 films, of course, is that TITANIC had
"legs" and "legs" and "legs" (speaking
of legs, CHECK
THIS SHIT OUT). The James Cameron film actually spent 15
consecutive weeks at the #1 spot at one point. I repeat: it
spent close to 4 months in the #1 spot back in 1997! The movie
marketplace isn't the same as it was back in 1997 either, with major
movies coming out every week, including 2 more this coming weekend
and then a bunch more in August.
Can
THE DARK KNIGHT maintain its rhythm or make enough major dough early
on in order to give TITANIC's $600M a run for its money? Let us know
your thoughts below and try and give us your reasonings as well as
your responses, of course. As for the answer to the ultimate
question: why so serious? 'Cause that's a lot of money, brah! PS:
It's to note that #2 on the all-time
list is the first STAR WARS movie with $460M. That, I'm
pretty sure it can/will beat...

I'm not really intending to comment on the article, but rather on Mr Boejangles... "going to personally donate 300million of my own money to this movie next week."
HAHA YEAH! That was awesome, dude. I laughed much! Deserved some recognition. |

Women go to c the Dark Knight almost as much as men. 48% of the viewers for TDK have been females. I think it has a chance to beat Titanic although it may be slim. |

IT WON'T.
Let's just sum up the facts that have been mentioned here, or just from actual reality.
TITANIC ran constantly in theaters from December 18, 1997 straight through to August 29, 1998 in roughly 40% of all cinemas. That's 8+ months. That alone is a remarkable feat, not matched since maybe the 1960s. THE DARK KNIGHT will run until the middle of September at the latest - as WB will want it on DVD as the earliest convenience so they can rake in $20 vs. $10.
As has been mentioned, a large portion of TITANIC's business was repeat business amongst teenage girls. Teenage girls have financial liquidity like nobody's business. That's just a simple fact. Has been since there's been a consumerist society. Teenage girls are spoiled. Unfortunately, there is nothing in THE DARK KNIGHT for teenage girls, which makes that market segment worthless to WB.
The second last factor was, despite the Winslet boobies, TITANIC was for the most part a family friendly picture. It was accessible to everyone. Can you honestly take your grandmother to THE DARK KNIGHT?
Finally, THE DARK KNIGHT is a comic book film - no matter how hard it tries to be something else. If you're not agreeable to men in capes, you're most likely not going to see this movie. That's $10 less for the Warner Brothers (and their sister Dot). No matter how much hype and marketing goes on, you can't attract those dollars. |

HOPEFULLY SO......
I have never been happier about a movie my entire life, being a major Batman fan from age 4 and all. I've always wondered what it would be like if a Batman movie had all the attention in the world and whatya' know, I know what it feels like now. Anyway, although I HOPE it will beat Titatic, my logic tells me otherwise. The Dark Knight is solid greatness, but Titanic has one major advantage; sentimental value. The movie is so heavy with emotion that even guys couldn't help themselves from watching it 5 times over! Plus, the ones who will continue to suppurt TDK will be the comic / Batman fans. The rest will watch it at a maximum of two times. Oh, how I'd love to see TDK stand tall as the highest grossing flick of all time. I doubt it, but you neva' know. I never expected it to do THIS well, and I've been proven wrong there already. Way to go Chris Nolan! |

I would love to see Dark Knight dethrone Titanic as highest grossest movie of all time. As much as I'd love to see it, I won't be holding my breath for it. It would have to match Titanic's run as consecutive number 1 movie for a long time and in each week, it's total should be in the high grossing numbers. It all depends on the audience to see if they will make Dark Knight's box office earnings consistent from here on. I'm sure the fans would be willing to go see Dark KNight as much as they can to make sure of that, but it's a question of the rest of the population if they'd be willing to spend their money to see it repeatedly as they did Titanic.
Only time will tell. |

TEENY BOPPERS VS FAN BOYS PRETTY MUCH
Both movies were AMAZING when they first came out. Marketing For Batman and a death made it something to care about, but as for the market in this day and age I doubt it will do what Titanic did not having too much competition back then. We'll see by next week how fast this movie will make it's way to three hundred mill or how slow. The Dark Knight is a better movie to me because it was not stuck on any particular theme but tackled a lot more than Titanic did but rightly said, will the teeny boppers give a damn about this in this day and age? This movie is serious and honestly more developed than titanic in general and has a selling point on Ledger as Titanic had on Celine Dion's theme song.
The Joker is the draw as was Jack in Titanic. We'll truly see wzup. I want Batman to do it cause it will be a foot stamp in Hollywood history on how to start treating the medium with more brains than brawn. It already has taken Hollywood in the right direction and actually made a good movie be the top seller of all time. Titanic was good too, but damn this is a comic book guy...LOL, and it's made an important step in the rigth direction. Batman was created in the great depression era and was a key thing to giving hope to the youth which Nolan really captured. 70 years or so later...He's back to do it again. Yes we are in a recession, don't get it twisted.
Gas to even get to the movies aint the same as before either. We can't be using money like that these days. I contributed though with my three viewings. Still got IMAX to go |
