Disney dropping CGI? Dec. 19, 2006
Source: Jim Hill Media
by: Mike Sampson

Walt Disney recently fired director Chris Sanders (LILO & STITCH) off the upcoming film AMERICAN DOG, which was supposed to be the studio's big 2008 release. Sanders created many of the film's characters and wrote the script and was fired along with 150 staffers? Doesn't sound like a Merry Christmas at The New Disney... But, according to Jim Hill Media, new Disney animation head John Lasseter didn't ditch Sanders because he didn't like the film. Apparently, Lasseter's new plan for Disney is to return the studio to its 2-D, traditional route. That's right - no more CGI-style CHICKEN LITTLEs from Disney. Sanders, who had designed his film to be a CGI feature all along and wasn't ready to redesign his film to fit the traditional mold, then left while a new director could be brought in to do said redesign. It's a tough break for Sanders and AMERICAN DOG but probably a smart move in the long run for Disney. Pixar, under this plan, would produce all the CGI films while Disney would produce only traditional film. That would mean that other projects in the Disney pipeline, like RAPUNZEL and THE FROG PRINCESS, could as well be transitioned into traditional style. A lot, apparently, is riding on next November's ENCHANTED, live-action/traditional animated film, to see whether traditional animation can still be successful.

John Lasseter is a genius and knows exactly what he's doing. I couldn't be happier with this.

firing that guy was a bda idea they should have ran with the cgi movie and had a bunch of other 2d projects on the shelf. it's not one or the other it could be both!

This sounds like genius! When was the last good live action/animation movie. I think "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" was the only worthy attempt at this, so Enchanted will probably flop in which case Disney would soon return to the CGI "sure thing". I'd bet money that we will never see any true return to traditional animation because CGI and Flash animation is just faster and cheaper. I'm a child of the Baby Boomers and my guess is that my generation will be the last one to really know traditional animation. The times they are a changin'.

IT'S STILL AN ART...

wel... I'm only hip because traditional animation is an art... and with stuff like Fantasia 2000, Disney has proved that this kind of animation has a lot of future still...
and we don't know, perhaps it will become a "state of the art" form time to time... heheh

Well, I am glad to hear that they're trying. Those are the kind of animated movies I loved growing up. We'll see how much quality can bring to them.

While they're add it, maybe bring back some of the musicals that became the most memorable Disney movies.

HMMM...
While I'm happy that Disney may be returning to it's old formula, it seems like a douche move on Lasseter's part to fire Sanders...especially when Sanders made one of the better Disney movies of late.

BULLSHIT!
I'm a massive supporter of traditional over CG animation, but how stupid is it to throw away all that work on a movie by the guy who gave us 'Lilo & Stitch?'

If they end up ditching the Rapunzel movie, then I'm going to get so angry that I will . . . probably just sit on my ass some more. But come on Lasseter, the production art on that is breath-taking.
